N&C Midwest September 2023
How does this whole summer just go by? Watered my beds, except for the potatoes and onions.

Getting ready to remove the bean plants from table top - then soon lettuce/greens that I have seedlings for will go in. Radishes where carrots were. Finishing up harvest of summer crops as they wind down.

I am trying to deal with the garden and pool at the same time.
I gave away a bunch of produce to a friend at work. Glad—she reached out wanting some.
I have a ton of jalapeños, I think I am going to make a mess of cowboy candy for Christmas gifts!
Need to get out there and harvest the squashes—I know there are zukes and possibly a patty pan or two!

I posted the safe recipe for Candied Jalapenos at the end of this thread. I still haven't tried them.

Re: N&C Midwest September 2023
Pruned the winter squash this evening so that the plants can concentrate on ripening the fruit that has already set rather than forming more small fruit that won't have enough time to ripen before frost. Some of the Butternut and Red Kuri squash are already much bigger than normal, but they need to finish ripening. I may try to get some pictures tomorrow of the larger fruit to show their size - it got dark on me this evening before I could finish the pruning.

Got a couple pictures of some of the larger Butternut and Red Kuri squash this morning before the rain started. They have another six weeks to grow and ripen before the first frost, but they are already bigger than most years.
The Waltham Butternut Squash are growing profusely and large this year. These two are already about 10" long.

This is the largest Red Kuri Squash this year, measuring 11" in diameter. There is another smaller one developing right next to this one.

I was scoping out my (new to me) Butterscotch squash and it looks ripe. Vine is looking puny….I will try to get some pictures later. Not sure if I should pick it or not?

If the stem has not turned brown & dry, leave it on the vine. Once it is picked, be sure to cure it before eating it or storing it.

Re: N&C Midwest September 2023
Yesterday I got to spend the day cleaning up some of the beds, and getting one bed ready for winter. Now have two of the five beds prepped for winter. Today is a whole day of rain, so no gardening. Fall is rapidly approaching. The cucumber and winter squash leaves are starting to yellow, and die back. About a month from the first frost, and the harvesting of the winter squash.

Picked nearly 6 gallons of green beans today from the Blue Lake Pole Beans on the arbor. Can't believe how heavy the beans were on the vines.

Lowe's has a big display of "Decorative Gourds" for sale in front of the store, and I found some Red Kuri and Blue Hubbard squash among the "gourds". They are asking $10.98 for each of them. That amazed me!
It looks like we will have 7 of the Red Kuri to harvest this year. I didn't plant any Blue Hubbard this year, but probably will grow one next year.

I just watered my peppers—they are DRY. I did not harvest anything there, just because of the extreme dryness….
And got in from harvesting my 2 small butterscotch butternut squashes. Nice, but pretty small. I will probably make them both at the same time with butter, brown sugar or maple syrup. They are very pretty though.
Also got my last 2 zukes,, and my last 2 patty pans. I am going to be eating a lot of vegetables!
I am having a lovely BLT for supper tonight…yum! Those tomatoes…

Picked the last of the cucumbers, then cut the plants off at the soil level and pulled the vines off of the arbor. Had a good year for the cucumbers, but the vines were done producing. I had panted carrots and beets in the bed under the cucumbers, and they can now finish growing for the fall crops.

That is my plan for tonight, OG, to cut down and clean out the cucumber bed. That is where I am putting my garlic for next year. If I have time, I will dig the potatoes and onions since they are done.

Yes, they are! The directions says to plant them at 4" spacing. I planted them 6" apart, and they grew unbelievably heavy.
Here is the description of them from Territorial Seed Co.:
This vigorous, 7 foot tall variety made Oregon’s Willamette Valley famous in the ‘60s and ‘70s for canning beans. The 6–7 inch, dark green pods have a canning-jar-straight, round shape. Harvested at their peak, you’ll find them tender, meaty, and full of hearty, fresh bean flavor.

Dug up all my potatoes and onions, and a few shallots for the first time! They are drying in the garage. I need to take a fork out there and make sure I got everything—they were very deep this year!
Made a nice supper with the damaged taters, a few eggplants that I had, and some garlic. It was yummy! Will have leftovers today for lunch.
Also harvested some tomatoes and plan a couple BLTs in the future! Garlic has been shipped. I usually pull it apart in the windowsill and let a week or so go by before planting it.
Need to harvest the peppers and some more eggplants this weekend, and take care of my houseplants to bring them inside.
