RE: What in the World id This?
Ewwwwwwwwwww! They look like scabbed or bruised potatoes. But the only time I've ever seen a pink potato is after they were peeled and the air got to them. Ewwwww! Yucky! Were they supposed to be pink?

Yes, they are pontiac red potatoes. The skin is reddish, the flesh is white, and they are deicious, when edible.

Has anybody seen this before?
Most probably Potato Scab Disease. It is a soil born bacteria that will remain in the soil indefinitely to infect future crops. Unfortunately, it can affect any root crop, including beets, turnips, carrots, etc.. A treatment that was used in fields when I was a young lad was plant Winter Rye, aka Cereal Rye as a winter cover crop and turn it under as green manure in the spring before planting the fields. Don't know if that is still the best treatment, but you might want to research Potato Scab Disease.

Re: What in the world is this????
I’ve never seen that before…I have had my taters split like that, really badly year before last. Uneven watering is what I was told contributed to that happening. This year all good.

My bucket potatoes had a light case. Still edible if peeled. Don't plant potatoes again in that area for a few years.

I never saw it either until this year.Scorpio Rising wrote:I’ve never seen that before…I have had my taters split like that, really badly year before last. Uneven watering is what I was told contributed to that happening. This year all good.
I didn't water well the first 6 weeks. The disease is always present in soil. By not watering evenly, that doesn't really cause it, it reduces the potatoes ability to fend it off.

Yes.markqz wrote:Were these grown in MM or regular soil?
It's the closest I have ever come to MM, but is more like 75% MM. I suck at composting so I have to depend on purchased products. Other than that it is MM.
I probably am not the worst composter online. But if we were to line up from the best composter to worst composter, I wouldn't be the worst guy. But me and him would be able to shake hands easily.

I don't know why this thread suddenly popped up in my email from a thread 15 days ago. But what was the potato disease or blightsanderson wrote:My bucket potatoes had a light case. Still edible if peeled. Don't plant potatoes again in that area for a few years.

that hit Ireland so badly and caused the Potato Famine?
The point being, I vaguely remember reading sometime over the last several decades of a farmer there who had slowly caused his soil to become resistant to that blight by reburying the potatoes in that soil? Sorry I don't have any more than a recollection.

Correct. One of the many acronyms you'll see here. Such as DH (dear husband), DW (dear wife), GC (garden center), MG (master gardener), etc., etc., etc..
