I direct sow the Dragon Tongue beans, Jam23. I start my “super hotties” (squash, cukes, melons) inside under lights on heat in peat pots as they don’t like to be transplanted.SR-Are you starting your Dragon Tongue beans indoors or direct sowing them? wrote:
I am toying around with the idea of starting summer squash and cucumbers indoors now to transplant in a few weeks or just wait and direct sow then. After this heat wave it will cool off next week, but fingers crossed that the threat of frost is gone.
And I also did nothing in the garden yesterday since it was near 90 degrees here.

The Swiss Chard was attached by slugs last night, so I put out some Sluggo Plus this evening to see it that will get them under control again.

I want to get my tomatoes and pepper in too but I'm worried about frost. Although, it doesn't seem likely.OhioGardener wrote:We're supposed to have rain Saturday & Sunday, so I'm planning on getting the tomatoes and peppers planted tomorrow evening. I installed the tomato cages today, so they're ready for the plants.

Went to our Master Gardeners plant sale yesterday. Got a couple hostas, 2 native Columbines, a big Iris, and a viola. My viola area was also infested with poison ivy. I had to hire help to eradicate it! But the violas also suffered. At least they multiply fast.

I planted my bunching onions in the cold frame (now just a 4x4) with some Gabrielle red leaf lettuce.
Looking good—will get Dragon Tongue beans in this weekend, and starting melons, cukes, etc.
Plans to plant my maters & peppers. Gonna get hot here, at least for a few days.

I got some cucumbers in today and more marigolds, sweet alyssum and some nasturtiums. I am going to wait a few more days for my tomatoes, peppers and tomatillos. This weekend it forecasted to be in the upper 50's and upper 60's for daytime temps with overnight lows around 44 degrees. Maybe they would be fine but I am nervous. Would you guys risk it??

I'll probably get mine in this weekend too. They are getting big and need to get in the garden beds!Scorpio Rising wrote:I’m risking it this weekend! All maters and peppers going in!JAM23 wrote:That stinks about your chard! My chard is still really little...LOL

Due to wonky weather, I completely missed many of the cool weather crops but will plant for fall.
Anyone else feel behind by a few weeks at least?

Still need to plant tomatoes and peppers, they are ready to go in. Maybe today after work. And will get super hotties going (cukes, melons, squashes).

Rice Hulls
Haven't ever done it before, but I'm going to use the rice hulls to mulch the green beans, lettuce, spinach, beets, and carrots. Ran out of home made compost, so these rice hulls are going to fill in. It will be a new experiment or me to see how well they hold up, ad what they look like by the end of the season.

I love your raised bed, Jam 23!
I will be interested in how the rice hulls do, OG. I have never seen those (but I don’t think I was looking either).
