Watering sfg
So, mels book talks about a cup of water per plant when it asks for it.
My conventional gardens are on reticulation from a bore we had installed many years ago.
How are people watering their gardens, just trying to find out what others are doing
My sfg setups I have been hand watering the root area with a watering can, I am finding i use about 2 and a bit gallons per 12 planted squares, i have about 50 planted squares, so that works out to be 4-5 refills of my watering can.
I just purchased a small atv 25 gallon pressure unit, so trying to work out how to proceed

I use drip irrigation on a timer so that the beds get regular watering weather I am home or not. I periodically check the beds with a moisture tester to determine if I need to increase or decrease the watering schedule.

How do you accomadate different plant outs with drip irrigation, are you doing one dripper per plant or per square.OhioGardener wrote:I use drip irrigation on a timer so that the beds get regular watering
I originally made my grids with water pipe and drilled them with holes but after doing my test run was not happy so I have only been hand watering since

The drip tubes have an emitter every 6" along the drip tube, and there are 4 drip tubes the length of each bed so that the entire bed is evenly watered. Some squares may be empty, but it is okay to keep the soil moist. Each bed has a valve on the main feed line so that the water to a bed can be turned off if the bed is not in use, which does not happen very often

This is my set up too! Can't remember -- maybe I'm following your lead. Certainly your inspiration.OhioGardener wrote:The drip tubes have an emitter every 6" along the drip tube, and there are 4 drip tubes the length of each bed so that the entire bed is evenly watered.
The last time I went shopping (2021), I discovered there was a run on 6" piping. I was eventually able to get some from Amazon. But it was easy to find 1 ft and other spacing piping. So if you're shopping, be sure to check and double check that it's 6 inch, and not some other spacing.
I also have a moisture checker to do spot checks. The thing about drip watering is that it doesn't look wet, so it can be hard to check visually.

I also use 6 inch drip emitters on my tubes. I put in some 1/2 inch tubing and some 1/4 inch tubing last summer to see what works best for me.

This is the supply company I use for the 1/2" drip tubing with emitters every 6". Each square has 2 rows of emitter tubing, so 4 emitters. And, yes, keeping the Mel's Mix moist throughout the bed is a good thing. You don't want it to dry out because it is a bear to get wet throughout again.
