I read your other post right after starting this thread and realized it's still not spring everywhere.trolleydriver wrote:Ha! Ha! Ha! Not going to be any blossoms here for a while.
Re: April Avatar: Spring is HERE!
Spring is not obvious everywhere, that's for sure. But under that blanket of snow is a world starting to come out of hibernation.

Not to worry CN.countrynaturals wrote:I read your other post right after starting this thread and realized it's still not spring everywhere.trolleydriver wrote:Ha! Ha! Ha! Not going to be any blossoms here for a while.

Guess is all depends on where you are. Cape Cod looks just like the bottom photo right now. I'll change this once things straighten out around here...

Pretty flowers!
I know it's spring because the orange tree is blooming and the bees are back in larger numbers.

CN,
Have you grown pears before?
I ask because I've been researching the dreaded codling moth, which primarily affects apples and pears.
When I saw your lovely photo, I wondered what had been munching the petals.
Have you previously had a problem with this pest?

Re: April Avatar: Spring is HERE!
Never heard of the codling moth. Not a clue what was munching the petals. I will check the apple tree tomorrow and see if anything has been chewing on it. We've never grown pears before. This tree was brand new last year. Now I'm off to look up the codling moth.donnainzone5 wrote:CN,

CN,
If there are any nearby trees that are infested, one must take precautions.
There's an old apple tree about 30'-40' from my three, and I'm told by neighbors that those apples are nothing but wormy. I think that's the only likely source of my codling moths.

Donna, Do you do anything to control them?

Spring is crazy, snow one day, some tornado activity the next...barn cats, chickens, and llamas were on their own when this came through yesterday..

CN,
The information you posted is the most comprehensive I've seen! Thank you.
It appears that vigilance, sanitation, and Spinosad may be the most effective and safest methods, according to that article.
Last year was the first year I had fruit, so I wasn't sure I'd need to protect the trees. Also, I was away in the hospital and rehab for three weeks, which didn't help matters.
Lesson learned!

Re: April Avatar: Spring is HERE!
No signs of any type of infestation. The apple tree is just starting to bud and the pear tree has a nice crop of perfect leaves and signs of tiny fruit at the base of the blossoms. So far, so good.donnainzone5 wrote:CN,

Thank you countrynaturals,
Had fun designing it for the llamas comfort. Lots of height, extra windows and sliding doors around the sides to promote good ventilation for overall health and comfort for heavy fiber animals. My husband teased me, another window and sliding door ? Geez, we need walls too! When it came to the roof my husbands first choice was this gambrel roof. I was fine with a regular straight boring roof but very happy with the results. No traditional red barn here either. Two reasons, the light color helps reflect the hot sun and heat in the summer and two, it matches the color of the house.

Sounds like our house -- animals first! They have all the comforts of home -- we still don't have a dishwasher.llama momma wrote:countrynaturals wrote:Ooooo, Momma! Love your barn. (Also jealous )

No Spring here right now. We are getting winds with gusts up to 90 k./hr (56 miles/hour), below freezing temps and a blinding snow blizzard. Yeuk.

We had a hard freeze last night and snow/sleet is in the forecast for Friday night. Peas, lettuce, spinach, and radishes have sprouted in the SFG. Covered them and was happy to see that they're fine.

Rarely ever spring here!
It's hardly ever spring in Miami, FL. We generally have summer and not has hot as summer, LOL! Humid but not as humid as usual. We had a pretty decent cool season that lasted more than a couple of weeks this year.
