Zera (TM) Food Recycler - kitchen composting
This sounds interesting, but I'm concerned about their additives.
I don't see anything about "natural" or "organic." If we would just be making chemical fertilizer, I'll stick with my little mini-food processor. Opinions?

What is the Zera™ Additive made out of?
The Zera™ Additive is made from coir and baking soda. Coir is made from coconut husk, a rapidly renewable plant-based resource. The Zera™ Additive Pack is made from paper and designed so the entire additive (including bag packaging) can be placed in the Zera™ device.

Yikes, the price! For $30, one can have a composting kitchen pail with carbon filters for composting kitchen scrapes (sans meat, bones and fat). This wouldn't be appropriate for making compost for SFG beds if it really uses coir as an additive. We already have peat moss (or coir) in the mix. All we need is pure compost.
This might be good for making a potting or flower bed product if one has money and extra room in the kitchen.

Really? I'll check that out.sanderson wrote:Yikes, the price! For $30, one can have a composting kitchen pail with carbon filters for composting kitchen scrapes (sans meat, bones and fat).
Now I get it -- the cheap ones don't grind it up -- they're just glorified garbage cans.
Re: Zera (TM) Food Recycler - kitchen composting
Just chop the scraps while you have the cutting board out. No need to grind. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t9800-show-us-your-kitchen-compost-container?highlight=composter

A couple things I appreciate about this is that it's able to handle meat & dairy and that it's ready w/i 24 hours.
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Interesting, but out of my spending limits.

That is pricey... I do like the concept of this device in terms of everyone* being able to have an appliance in their home that makes food 'waste' into something that's not waste without the effort/mess of composting. *With everyone not being everyone with the current cost. But many household appliances that are common today were once luxury items, so who knows...
If I had one I would probably try replacing the refill packets with something homemade...and probably void my warranty and break the thing... The baking soda is probably for pH control and keeping odors down, and I'm guessing the coconut coir is a 'brown' compost ingredient that is probably in part for moisture control - sawdust would probably work similarly.
