Re: Happy Winter Solstice
I am celebrating Winter Solstice by going on a Labrinth walk at 7pm this evening and donating four stuffed toys, I HAVE grown out of them, and also donating some tinned sardines.
I retained three stuffed toys that have memories for me. All part of my downsizing my home for any future changes.
I love the longest night of the year as it means that the the night is retreating.

Re: Happy Winter Solstice
Sanderson, I have some pictures from when I first built it. In the early spring the covers were used to protect the peppers from late frosts, and this fall they were used to keep the lettuce, spinach, kale, and mizuna growing after the the first frost - and until we had several days & nights in the teens.
I put 1" PVC pipe into the corners of each section to slide the cover supports in, and put caps on them when they are not in use to keep them from filling with dirt.

The frost cloth supports slide into the in-ground pipes. The supports were later modified to have a center ridge pole to keep the supports in the right place and to hold the frost cloth - I couldn't find a picture of it with the ridge pole in place.

Re: Happy Winter Solstice
I am putting used coffee grounds, garden plant debris, shredded leaves and shredded wheat straw in each bed. I am mixing it all up and then turning it under. I am trying to add some tilth to MM to help retain a little more moisture during our long hot summers. If it is not mostly composted by planting time I will have to add some extra nitrogen to the beds. We shall see how this works out.

Re: Happy Winter Solstice
Well, I up and missed the Winter Solstice.
I can't believe that from now on, the days will be getting longer.

Re: Happy Winter Solstice
Oh Heavens! sanderson. Now I know why I woke up feeling a lot happier today, SPRING IS ON THE WAY!
I often find this long down slide to the least number of daylight hours a little depressing but I am on the rebound now and looking forward to Christmas, the New Year and all that is calling to me in the near future, like the first sight of the snowdrops.
Thank you for reviving this thread as we can read what was written from the past. We have so many threads now through the years I have been on this site, and there are many more who have been on longer than I and it is nice, and sometimes sad, to recognise those names. Thank you, those who take the trouble of reviving these past threads, there is a wealth of knowledge there that should not be lost.
