What would we do without emoticons? It would be like sitting on our hands while trying to tell a story.

Reminds me of when I was at school and the teacher asked one of the boys to stand up and tell us in the class how to get from school to the railway station in town which was a twenty minute walk. The boy did so and as we watched and listened wondered why he was asked to do that.
The teacher then asked the boy to repeat what he said as near as he could remember it, but instead keep his head still and his hands by his side and not move them. The second time he certainly had a hard time getting his instructions across.
I am sometimes aware that I wave my hands around when I am trying to tell something.

We have an exercise in one of our classes where someone has to talk through instructions with hands in pockets. Another has to demonstrate the same thing without speaking. Then someone has to do demonstrate while speaking. It's very interesting. I also use my hands. A LOT...

Marie: Our hands are a second language or least an accompaniment that we cannot do without. I have never noticed anyone talking who kept their hand still.

I had to laugh when I re-read my quote, as the other day I was in a local coffee shop talking to a friend, and waving my hands around, I knocked my flask of coffee across the table and into her lap.
I still have that friend.

I have already proved it, sanderson. My morning sunrise was on minute earlier and my sunset tonight was two minutes later.sanderson wrote:Happy Winter Solstice! From here on out, our days will be getting longer.

It's also the time for the Great Conjunction or Christmas Star when Jupiter and Saturn line up to look like a double star or one big star. We are having fog right now but my daughter is in So Cal and should be able to see it.
Re: Happy Winter Solstice
We had a heavily overcast sky with snow flurries, and we didn't get to see a thing. Guess I'll wait for the next one in 2080....

You have through the first week of January!
I viewed them through binoculars. Kind of shaky, and definitely not seeing the rings of Jupiter, but a fairly easy astronomical viewing target even with fog, smog, and light pollution.

Happy Winter Solstice!
I forgot all about it with all the errands at this time of the year. I just realized that some 30 days after New Years I will be setting up my seed station.

I've been looking forward to seeing longer days for some time now. (Seeing a little more rain in my rain gauge would also cheer me up.....also part of my Seasonally effective disorder).

SED is also common over here, especially during the fog season. I can tolerate the days of rain because of the snow pack it creates. But, fog is a real downer.

Re: Happy Winter Solstice
You guys can have some of my rain this winter. 3-1/2 inches over the last week. I hate cold weather but hate it even more when it is cloudy and raining. UGH.
