Happy Winter Solstice!
Is anyone else celebrating the fact that the days will be getting longer now?
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Absolutely!! I was thinking the same thing wondering around the garden with my 2nd cup of "cafe".

The winter solstice is the start of my gardening year as something's start to waken to the phase of the nearest full moon , veg & flower beds are sometimes clear & the new compost goes in to sort itself out and bring on the worms

Today I went into the glasshouse & had a look at the geraniums I've taken out the beds and set in fairly dry MM . I had to remove lots of dead leaf and prune a few dying stems how ever most of them are showing signs of new growth .
I also walked around our small ornamental garden pond 10 foot x 20 foot area inc a pumped waterfall . As I got near the big oak I noticed that the hazelnut had loads and loads of 1.5 inch long catkins on it and that there is a seven foot all skinny white flowering shrub in full bloom . Neither of them were there this time last week . In the front flower beds I have quite a few over wintering pansy in strong bloom , the crocus are also well into sending up their leaves.

You betcha! I look forward to this day even more than Christmas.
I used to be bothered by S.A.D., so my wife bought me an expensive full spectrum light to sit in front of 30 minutes a day. But the glare was too strong, and I couldn't read, use the computer, or watch TV, so I quit sitting in front of it.
Now I use the light to grow lettuce indoors during winter!

My SAD weather is usually in Dec-Feb when we get fog, sometimes deadly fog. Follows a rain when the sun shines a couple days. Big freeway pileups. But I plan to visit Audrey above the fog line to bring a spring to my step.

I also look forward to the Winter Solstice; maybe it is just in my head, but now I can count on a minute or two more light each day. It lifts my spirit.

I agree, the down hill slide is all over for this year, all up hill from here.

My housemate doesn't see the importance of the solstice, but I certainly do - I "feel" the days getting longer - imagination, true - but still!
