Re: Mel Bartholomew's Birthday Today
Mel has left a wonderful legacy. Thank you, Mel, and I bless the day that my DH spent 50c to buy that first book of yours and that I went on to the Internet and found this Forum that has added so much to my retirement years.

Re: Mel Bartholomew's Birthday Today
I married Peggy late in life I was already 45. Working on a boat I was unable to garden cause i was away so much for long periods one of the first things we did was plant some trees and decide to garden. I had watched Mel on PB TV and his square foot method appealed to the geeky engineer in me and I marveled at the efficient grid patern the dense planting he used. I had received his first book from a sister as a present and long hours on the boat I had read and studied and dreamed about giving it a try. Now I must admit I didn't follow it to the letter instead I used it like a recipe and developed my own version with his book as inspiration. We started with a 4x4 herb garden that was so amazingly successful a 4X12 vegetable garden followed the next year. Mel changed with his second book but he had gotten us off to such a great start we stayed the course. Our boxes are 12 inches tall and the one rule we obey is they can never be over 4 ft on one side. We use mel mix when we can but over the years we find it too expensive we dont compost correctly just pile stuff up in a heap.
One thing is sure few men have have as much influence in my life and I will cary Mel's memory to heaven with me where I hope to meet him.
