tomato canopy
Last season I made a quick version of a canopy to hold tomato plants high off the ground, giving the lower area good ventilation. As everyone should be aware of ventilation for tomato's is important to prevent problems with plants.
This season I decided to polish up this idea with 40 various plants..Shown below is up to date. I'll be adding pictures as plants progress, hoping it works as well as hoped for. As the plants grow I will rest them on above supports, trimming below as necessary, while keeping above pruned.
All plants here have been started and flourished in Mel's Mix...using compost right out of the pile.
Images are in series as I put this together..![tomato canopy 115](https://i.servimg.com/u/f86/18/16/45/79/115.jpg)

It amazes me most of the time, not in a good way either...LOL....Must be a kickoff from my early teenage days, I wanted an erector set soooo bad (Gilbert) was the company that made them, parents just couldn't afford it..
Wife says my garden is now my erector set.
Now as I sit and look at my garden I am always thinking of what to do...someday hopefully, I'l sit and enjoy it..
I got the canopy idea from seeing all the lush top growth in the rain forests. Maybe this will turn into some type of a new trellis system..It bring the fruit up to the light where needed, keeps the bottom free and clear for air..That I've been doing for years.

Jimmy, where do you get all the supplies to build all this neat stuff? If they don't have it at Home Depot I wouldn't know where to go. I'm totally craft and construction challenged!

Re: tomato canopy
1953 I had my very first auto. A 1941 buick torpedo. not a window was solid, take the floor mats up and you could see the road., people followed me by the trail of oil I left on the road. Etc Etc. It wouldn't start one day and I had to call a mechanic. After he got the car running, I asked him what he did. He showed me a point file. ( these days cars don't need them). That was the beginning of my hoarding career. When tires had tubes, I carried all parts to repair the tire, even breaker bars to remove tire from rim, if I couldn't repair it I just replaced with a new tube I carried along.CapeCoddess wrote:Jimmy, where do you get all the supplies to build all this neat stuff? Now aske me where do / did I get all this stuff...I collect and can't discard anything, I put it out for trash to take, then I sit and have morning coffee looking at all I could make with it...back it goes.
So strange though, my wife is so neat and orderly....HA HA HA..but I do buy lots also.

Jimmy, Are these determinates or indeterminates? Now that they are getting taller, I see how it works. ![thinking](/users/2912/12/27/03/smiles/27650.gif)

Nice idea, Jimmy. Your miniature "rain forest" is looking so lush!
I was wondering, why do you have rings around your tomatoes? Is it to prevent cutworms, or something else?

Sometimes it just takes a bit of time. Also depends on the speed of your internet connecion and maybe the speed of your computer. When I had DSL it took a lot longer to load the pictures in a thread. Now that I have cable internet, they come up real fast, usually.terryNeb wrote:Why am I unable to see his pictures. I'm logged in.

Originally, I added these when planting, they went on easy, added a bit of protection from whatevers. chipmunks, etc. Then as I watered I found it was so nice to just add water to the container, watch it fill and drain. Since Mel's Mix is so friable, it is nice to see good drainage. Also, I think it looks neat, especially in the beginning. Any crawling critters are needing to work for access.
