I vote we bring back carrot week in honor of Rooster. But because of the diverse climates of our forum members let's call it carrot week/month/year.

Show us your carrots!  Let us know when you plant them and what your favorites are, if any. Let's watch them grow by posting updates every so often.

Today I planted my favorites!  Sweet, fat and just the right length for the SFG depth. Carrot Week/Month/Year 2015 Img_2018

Last weekend I planted a new to me variety - Danvers 126. Has anyone grown those?

Tell us about you carrots and let's see photos if you have any yet. You can bet I'll be posting mine as soon as they pop up.

Sorry, but I doubt I'll be growing carrots.  They need too much attention with moisture and I'm not going to my Back 40 (the 40 square feet for my SFG up a steep hill behind the house) unless I absolutely have to.  This year my crops will be very, very limited there and my perennial flowers taking up the most of the space instead.
I'll be interested, tho, to see pics and read updates of those doing it again.

Oh we have some growing not sure what they are though. My boys, 3 and 8, helped me plant them. Rolling Eyes The greens are getting big and looking great. Hoping the edible part is growing big too. I'll get a picture tomorrow and figure out how to post it.

I will gladly plant a few carrots (actually, a few hundred!)  I love me some carrots and I will put in a few extra squares for Carrot Week/Month/Year.  I only have 2 bags left in my freezer, so I will be counting the days until harvest.  drooling hungry Carrot Week/Month/Year 2015 998388915

Last year I tried carrots for the first time and they did wonderfully - Burpee's Sweet Treat Hybrid.  Left them in bed all summer and didn't pull until just before the first frost, they lasted on the cold porch until this Feb (when I let them dry out - bad me).

Will plant these again and one other (undetermined at this point) as soon as I can empty the bed out of something else planted last fall.

The variety that has done the best in my garden is Cosmic Purple.  I have 2 full packs of seeds plus a partial from last year, so I have enough seeds to fill at least 2 of my LARGE boxes.  I will probably only plant about 300, but I may just get carried away and make half of my garden CARROTS!!!

The Cosmic Purple Carrot garden!  That has a nice ring to it Laughing

I have a 2x6 bed set aside for carrots this year.  Has any one found much slug damage on carrots?  That bed is infested but thinking back I do not remember slugs attacking carrots which should make this a good bed for them.  I think I will cover the seed with sand, carrots love sandy soil and slugs hate sand so win win.

My carrot experiment is to intentionally grow several different varieties with varying harvest times starting with radishes.  The idea is a natural thinning process.  Half Long Danvers and Nantes are 70 day to harvest on the package.  Purple Sun is 90 days and then Laguna is 90-120 days.

I look forward to seeing where every one is at right now and how the seasons progress.  One of my favorite parts of this forum is reading about gardens in such different regions.

I planted several varieties again this year (kuroda, nantes, atomic red, chantenay, and danver's half).  I'll post some pics this evening...nearly 100% germination (some loss due to squirrels digging).

Yes, but after running through the food processor with the slicer blade.  These are the last 2 bags from the 2013 season, as I only got 13 carrots last year!   Carrot Week/Month/Year 2015 950477

I'm really glad to see this thread make a comeback!  I enjoyed it when Rooster oversaw it.  I'm not sure I will have as colorful a harvest as last year (see my avatar).  This year I tried to focus on the varieties that my wife and daughter favored.  Lunar White for my wife and Cosmic Purple for my daughter.  I also planted Danvers.

And then there was the pot luck patch...  I just scattered a random mixture of varieties.  I'm not sure which seeds "took."

I planted seeds last fall and they overwintered.  Now that it's warmer, they are starting to take off.

This will be my only carrot crop until fall.  I just started picking these Red Cored Chantey (sp) that were planted 10/5/14.  Just picking a few at a time.  Not sure the wait all this time was worth it.  I will plant earlier in the fall this year so they can be harvested late fall or early winter.

It took me several seasons to figure out that I needed to get my carrots planted by mid-May, in my climate, in order to give them enough time to mature before winter sets in.  I keep them well-watered through the hottest part of summer, and they do fine.  I leave them in place, and harvest throughout winter.

I pull any remaining carrots just as soon as I see them starting to grow again in early spring.  When they start growing again the second year, I've found that the carrots get bitter because all the energy goes toward producing a flower.

I got my carrots planted yesterday.  I mixed seed from 4 packets, Danvers Half long, Nantes, Purple Sun, Laguna.  They vary from a 70 day to 120 day maturity rate.  So now I will find out what that means.  If they all sprout and are not eaten by slugs.

Has any one made Carrot top Pesto?
