Re: Carrot Week/Month/Year 2015
Yay, CC, nice carrots! And Yolos, love the picture. Growing in the south sure sounds challenging.
I got my carrots planted this weekend. The hardest part of carrots, for me, is getting them to sprout. I've come up with a system. I put them in my 2x3 foot, 6 inch tall top hat, water well, then top the whole top hat with an old storm window. Once I see some babies coming up, I remove the window. That way, they A) stay moist and B) don't get washed away by rain! It seems like every time I plant carrots, we get hard heavy rain right afterwards. This method helps a lot!
Of course, the window creates a lot of nice warm sheltered soil that ants just love So I usually have to kick them out a few times. If it's not one thing it's another, eh?

carrots and such
I planted my seeds too close and now am thinning like crazy. it has rained a lot so they are easy to pull out overcoming my reluctance to thin.
Now - how do I put this here and also in Hawaii group? I swear I get dumber every day.

"Copy" what you wrote, then bring up your Hawaiian topic. Select Reply and then paste. I have done that when I'm talking about a topic and then want to post in Northern Cal.

My carrots looked like Kate's last year. Trying again this year. I think these are "Burpee", can't remember more than that. Supposed to be about 6" carrots. Got a couple squares coming up, probably need a little thinning.
