Melons in the SFG? Empty Melons in the SFG?

Post  BrianDorry55 2015-04-01, 07:56

So I am sowing seeds today for my square foot garden for Spring/Summer...I have melon seeds that came as an extra from a rareseeds.com order. They sound really good, and I wouldn't mind trying a plant out but I only have 48 squares to work with so I don't want to give up a bunch of space to one plant. If I train it up a trellis, can I grow a melon plant in a single square in the SFG? I don't know if it matter but it is a smaller variety called Ananas D'Amerique A Chair Verte. Thanks for any help!

Yes, that should be fine in one square if it's being trellised.

Agree with Marie. Cantaloupes do fine on a trellis. As well as baby watermelons and winter squash.

Thanks for the help! I have a few extra feet of trellis in that area that won't be used so if it gets out of control, I won't need to confine it's climbing to one square of the trellis.
