Grains? Empty Grains?

Post  ColoradoNatureGirl 5/4/2010, 6:12 pm

Has anyone ever planted gain, such as wheat or oats in a square foot garden? I make all my own bread and am toying with the idea of grinding my own flour. Just thought I would see if anyone has grown any grains before.

Thanks

I planted some Giant Amaranth this spring. Never tried it before and not really sure what to expect, but it should be interesting! Grains? Icon_lol

Awesome, I can't wait to see how it goes for you. Where do you find the seed? It doesn't seem to be something you find at the local garden center.

Thanks! I ordered it from Baker Creek. I am hoping it might be strong enough to train my cukes on, but I'll have a trellis standing by just in case.

Supposedly the Amaranth can yield up to a pound of seed per plant. I am planting three (one per square, which may be wishful thinking) so if I get even half yield, I should be able to experiment a bit. I hope I hope I hope! Grains? Icon_bounce

I haven't tried it myself, but I attended a conference back last fall, and one of the classes I attended was growing grain & legumes in your backyard, presented
by the Illinois State University. I think what really caught my eye about this class was they used the SFG method for their gardens.

The instructor said that many gardeners overlook the fact that growing grain in a small area is possible. Although the harvest may be small, just adding your own grains to your recipes will add nutritional value as commercial grain processing removes a fair amount of the minerals and vitamins found in the germ and bran.

Wow, that sounds like a cool conference! I found some mushroom growing workshops in my area that will start up again in the fall and I can't wait! Very Happy
