For some reason I couldn't find the worm bin valve Box thread I started. It must be mixed in with another topic. Anyway here's a unexpected update that occurred today when I was preparing the beds for this spring.

Nice! I also had a surprise today in 2 of my beds. I ran out of room to store the last Berkeley straw/manure/veggie/coffee compost so I piled it up high in different beds. I grabbed a small handful of the top layer in 2 boxes today and found little red wigglers (compost worms). bounce I haven't fed them in their worm tubes for a month or so, so I was really happy.

2nd stage/update on experimenting of vermicomposting within the SFG bed.
transforming my worm bins from the irrigation valve boxes used last year to using lowes 2.5 gal buckets. This allowed me to simply pulled the buckets out of the SFG bed and harvest the vermicompost casting after the worms have moved out into the bed. This way I don't have to dig it out and can go do something else with my life.
tha netting to protect the greens from cabbage worms, etc...insects has been very useful. Thank you SFGardeners for the suggestions.

Using the buckets looks like it will be so much easier to empty. I don't think you will have to experiment any further. Very Happy

I have to find out how long will the worms take to find the food or do I need to jump start it. Then see how long it will take to get to harvesting time. I like having the room to to mixed things up easily. I made do 4-5 of them with some purchased worms and measure the time interval between in bed worms and purchased worms.
