This January while it's snowing and blowing, I'm dreaming and planning and nursing a cold. Had SFG at past houses and last summer was first summer here with a couple 2'x 6' boxes. Nice thing about moving is leaving past SFG mistakes behind! Will to get it right this time.  Laughing

This yard is tiny though so will have to do some thinking and re-organizing of landscaping. And need to source tubes for grow lights since moving company wouldn't take them.

Hope this finds everyone well and I look forward to meeting my fellow Canadians.
glad you\'re here glad you\'re here glad you\'re here piratemum.

As the brand new Regional Host for Canada may I welcome you as my first capture from Canada.  I was beginning to think there were no Canadians who were into SFG but you are proving me wrong. I started in January first but I think every Canadian is hibernating and won't come out until groundhog day or something like that.

Anyway, I am dreaming as well, but I expect to do outdoor sowing before you in Ontario as I live in British Columbia, albeit in the Interior.  Looking forward to spring when I just know we will all wake up and get moving.

Your garden may be tiny but SFG is ideal for that. I started with a couple of 4x4s the first year and kept myself in salads all summer long and into the fall, so I got hooked.

Ask questions, as others have said, and we will help dig for the answers.

Apologies for that word "dig". It slipped out. Embarassed

Again, glad you\'re here , Piratemum

Kelejan, your house has a similar look to mine. Was it a kit house built in the 50's by chance?
I have no idea, molly. All I know  is that is was built by my next-door neighbour after he finished building his own for his new bride.  I do believe it must have been in the 1950s though.

George  died a couple of years ago and his wife moved to a seniors place.  They used have to have a wonderful garden and when I moved in she told me not to go mad and cultivate the hillside behind us as one could not keep up.

Their house was sold and the people let the garden go to wrack and ruin and the house is under tax sale unless they pay the city taxes. His wife made the mistake of going back to look at it and she was heartbroken when she saw it.  When I went to her memorial afternoon and saw photographs of what it had been I could understand her sorrow.

If ever I have to move, I will never return even if I live in the same city, as I do not want that kind of heartbreak.

Thanks for the welcome! CANADIAN REGION - What are you doing January 2015 - Page 2 3170584802

Sanderson, thanks for the tiny yard encouragement. I picked up some giant pots from Lowes on clearance last fall and will use them where I can - even if it's in the driveway! Of course, isn't that always the spot with the best sun?

Kelejan, I believe you're right about us Cdn's hibernating. I bet come spring this forum will be full. There's definitely been an upswing in our area for 'local' and 'sustainable' so I imagine many more will be discovering SFG.

Again, thanks for the welcome and I look forward to chatting with everyone!
take care.  thanks

Piratemum,  Regarding pots.  I use plastic 12" (bells) and 10" (hot) for peppers.  12" for eggplant and summer squash.  They are easy to move en mass as the sun moves through the seasons.  I do top dress with compost through the growing season and mulch the surface to keep the soil cool and reduce the amount of water from evaporating at the surface.  Winter of 2013-2014, I kept them in the mini green house and they over wintered, to my happy surprise.  The lost their leaves but were still alive to start branching in the spring.

When I was looking for an avatar picture I was pleased to find a picture of my SFG from a past house. It was new construction and you can see the dirt pile that became our neighbours house.

There were 6 - 4x4 boxes and the wee potato box you can see to the left. Unfortunately the compost I used for homemade MM was not very well composted apparently - these boxes grew a TREMENDOUS amount of weeds. It was very disheartening. But then we moved for hubby's work and I learned to love SFG again. Smile

I've been looking at others SFG and getting very inspired! I haven't checked out the gallery yet but will do so. Do you have picts of yours Kelejan?
take care.

Oh, they look great! I like the idea of keeping peppers in pots - frees up more room in the boxes and, like you said, easier to move for maximum sun. thanks

Last time I went to San Antonio in Texas it took my four day by bus. I reckon it is quite a long way away, has55. Very Happy
