Winter Travel

Okay, I know you folks up north have already gotten snow & are used to this type of thing. 

But if you folks don't remember last year down here in Atlanta, it was called "Carmageddon."  And it was a mess!

So here are some recommendations for winter travel.

1.  If your DOT tells you it's coming in and to stay home, please do so!!!! 
     (Our emergency workers couldn't get to accidents, etc. because the folks driving
     used the emergency lanes along w/ everything else.  Some folks were stuck for
     over 24 hours.  These folks had a good week of warning before it arrived!)

2.  Carry the following provisions in your vehicle at all times:
     Toilet paper, water, power bars/jerky/some type of easily transportable food, a
     blanket or two, gloves, hats, jackets, good boots in case you have to walk, some
     way to get power to your cell phone that doesn't rely on your car battery, any
     medications you use (enough for a couple of days anyway).

We actually have "go-bags"/backpacks with shelters (good paint tarps) a small stove that uses pellets, iodine pellets to clean water if necessary, food for several days, medications, space blankets, extra undies, tp, etc.  They stay in our cars during the winter.  We also keep water, canteens, etc. in the vehicles.

Be safe...  STAY HOME!  It's not worth losing your car or your life to get out in that mess!

Snow tires are your friends!

Heheh, great picture! Last year, my mother slid down her driveway and into a tree. Good thing it was there or she could have tumbled down a steep incline. That was the first year she bought snow tires. This year, she got them on the first day she could.

Marie,  I would add books, old issues of gardening mags, coloring books and crayons (kids?), Suduko, etc. for day time entertainment, flashlights and an empty large "jar."

Sometimes I wish chains were legal in my state.

Didn't know that. Isn't every state like California?? Thank goodness, not.

Why the heck can they not hold their annual meeting on mid-summer day?

Camp, I LOL'ed, but only because your presentation was so good!

I learned my "Don't Join the Summer Tire in Winter Club" lesson very mildly -  a couple of consecutive 360's coming around an on-ramp, not driving too fast (well, I guess I was, but only because of my tires!). I didn't hit anybody or anything, but came to a stop facing the wrong way on a three lane highway.

I drove two more exits, where there happened to be a tire store and spent the money. Truly, no matter how broke you are, either get real tires or stay home. I don't say that without compassion, but still.  I could have killed myself and/or others.

I did that coming from Derry NH to W. Hampstead, NH in heavy snowstorm and almost wound up in a lake. Was only doing about 20-25 mph and had snow tires. Just caught the icy, snowy road the wrong way.   Scared was not the word and 2 yo daughter was screaming her head off in the back seat.  Road turned right, left, left to get around the lake and I wound up going the wrong direction after the spins.   Had to go back to the beginning to get turned around and make the turns around the lake again.  And I still had to drive the rest of the way home.  Southerner trying to drive in N.E. snow not a good idea, but it wasn't snowing when I left home.

Good additions, Sanderson!  Here is some of what we went thru last Jan because folks didn't listen.

Kids ended up spending the night at school or on the bus, folks were stuck in grocery stores, families were stuck in cars for over 24 hours w/ no food, water, tp, blankets, etc. 

It was like this all over the city.

Marie, I remember watching the traffic snarls on the news last winter.

One thing when travelling I always had an emergency bag of some food bars, water, blanket, etc. etc.
I was never caught out luckily.
Even though I no longer have a car, if travelling with someone any distance I would make sure I had something.

I like to carry a pair of spare junky pants and a t-shirt and shoes so if I have to change a tire, I don't ruin good clothes and shoes. It can be a messy job. And a jacket or at least a sweater in case it gets cold, and an instant-charger in case my battery goes dead, as well as one of those small bottles of fuel additives in case I run out of gas and need just another mile or so. They've all come in handy.

I've never had an issue with snow but I need to get busy with this.  I don't even have my scraper in the car yet.

I do have granola, water, large bright orange blanket, cat litter.  Prius will run without gas, albeit very slowly, and also run my portable car seat warmer, so I'm good there.  Still I need shovel, scraper, boots, flashlight, reading material...and since I don't own a cell phone I could get a free emergency only cell phone from the town Council on Aging. (Hard to believe I'm old enough )

OK, ya'll got me thinking and moving...this is good.
