Mel's Mix or DIY mix in Los Angeles?
Hi folks,
I am a newbie to SFG and am planning to build a couple boxes out of those composite wood/plastic boards.
For the filler, I am thinking of buying the ready-made Mel's Mix if I can find it in Los Angeles.
I live just south east of Beverly Hills, near Olympic and Fairfax.
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul and If you can find the ready made mix, go for it. There are multiple threads on the forum regarding mix and various mulches, lots of info here. Congratulations on starting your new garden!!!
Re: Mel's Mix or DIY mix in Los Angeles?
Last time I looked, Lowe's in Hawthorne had pre-packaged Mel's Mix. Visit the Lowe's website for that or other stores to see if it's currently in stock.

Mel's Mix
I have been to Lowes in Temecula quite a bit lately - have been comparing prices on peat, etc with Home Depot and JUST this last week saw the Mel's Mix. It definitely had not been there the week before. So it must be something they are just starting to carry. It is still a little expensive compared to making my own, except for the fact that the closest vermiculite vendor I have found is the OSH in Rancho Cucomonga. It ain't worth the 100 mile+ round trip unless I get about 5 bags. I look forward to trying it out in the next box.
Lowe's and Mel's Mix
I am about 20 miles from Lowe's in Hawthorne and one in the San Fernando Valley. I looked online, but did not see that they carry Mel's Mix. However, maybe I will ring them up and see.
Lowe's also carries a 4'x8'x6" box made from that plastic wood for around $40. Good deal.
Hoping I can pick it all up at Lowe's.
Cheers,
Paul

Paul,
The "Mel's Mix" at Lowe's is under the Garden Time label and manufactured by Gro-Well.

vermiculite source
if you're looking for vermiculite, grainger stores should always have some in stock. if they don't have it they can usually get it within a day or even same day. there are grainger express stores all over los angeles and you can order online or over the phone. you may need to open an account but ask when you talk to them.
