Carrot Harvest
picked some carrots this evening (had a helper)...probably one of our best seasons for carrots.

Helper

Usually we find black swallowtail caterpillars on the carrots...but none this spring...however, we noticed our dill plants loaded with tiger swallowtail caterpillars...here's one.

Re: Carrot Harvest
Great looking harvest. Hope mine turn out this good.
The swallowtail caterpillars - I hope to find at least one. My friend collects them and feeds them the carrots tops until they spin - in the spring she takes pics of them as they are coming out and watches them fly away. So, I want to catch at least one and try it. I've done it with Monarch butterflies and the milk weeds. Fun and a great lesson for kids.

Re: Carrot Harvest
nice ones!! Do you remember the variety? Anyone have any ideas on long sweet carrots? We have taken the bottoms off our our beds, so now we can grow the long kind, but we like the thin sweet ones
Looks like what she grew!! Congrats!!

Re: Carrot Harvest
I planted in my home SFG's with Mels Mix...I have one 4'x4' box that's 12" deep and another 2'x2' box that's around 16" deep. I try to mix in some hardwood ash into squares before seeding beets and carrots.
I planted Kuroda and Scarlet Nantes...decided not to mess with any other varieties this year.

I also planted Nantes carrots in April. The Kuroda have not yet gone in, although I expect to plant some soon for a later harvest.
Re: Carrot Harvest
What does the hardwood ash do for the carrots and beets? Do you get this from your fire pit? My beets never developed and my carrots are short and woody, despite deep soil to grow into.

Re: Carrot Harvest
I have friends that scatter hardwood ash in areas seeded in beets and carrots...I think for the potassium.
I tend to mix a little in specific squares, not throughout the entire box as it may jack-up the pH for other plants.

We have a 4 x 4 space 12 inches
deep. I wondered what to plant. I'll get some long type carrot seeds. Thank you. Gorgeous carrots!!
