Couple Questions from a Newbie
Howdy!
1. What is the best thing to plant East Facing - I get about 5 hrs of sunlight on my balcony. I have a 2 x3 tabletop planter 6 inches deep in Dallas TX.
2. I have some tomatos in some pots that the bottoms are turning brown before they rippen? What could this be?
3. Can I use the same dirt in my pots to plant new tomatos? I'm assuming I just pull the whole plant out in July to plant a new one?
Thanks in Advance!
Angela

Hi Angela. I only lived in TX for a short time, so I'm sure someone from your area will be able to give you some good ideas.
Of course, it really depends on what you like to eat. In looking at the seed packaging, look for "partial sun" or "afternoon shade."
On the tomatoes - that could be Blossom End Rot. Can you post a picture so we can see? That will help us narrow it down for you.

Thank you! I already threw out the bad ones so I will take a picture next time
I just googled photos of the end rot and yes ! That seems to be it. Is the plants bad and should I throw out?

If you re-use soil, be sure it's soil there wasn't any disease in it last year. Alternatively, solarizing it may help if you suspect disease.

Re: Couple Questions from a Newbie
Angel....about BER (blossom end rot), its a lack of calcium but that usually only happens to the first tomatoes. Remove those fruits only as you find them. I've had good luck with the 2nd flush of tomatoes that grows on the same vine. No BER. Don't toss it out. Wait it out.
Also, you can sprinkle dried Calcium-fortified milk around the plant and a spoon or two of Epsom salts (which releases the calcium) around the plant also if you haven't done so when you transplanted the seedling outdoors initially.

Re: Couple Questions from a Newbie
+1 and put the tomatoes in the area that gets the most sun. Kale and chard should do well in your space. Neither need that extra sun to flower or fruit and both can take heat. In the fall after it cools off you can add lettuces.
