Fall Update:

I shredded another 72 gallons of leaves today and put them in large trash cans until I decide whether I want to start a new compost pile or just stockpile them until spring.

Here are some pictures of my garden as of 12/07/14.
Bed - 4 x 12 of cover crop of winter peas.  Slowly growing because not much sun on that end of the garden in the winter.

Another 4 x 12 bed I am growing a cover crop of winter peas and annual rye grass.  Also getting very little sun this time of year.

Broccoli in a couple of beds.

Some more winter veggies.  Winterbor Kale, Brussel sprouts, leeks, broccoli, carrots, radishes.

Garlic and and Shallots.  Really growing nicely but I hope they will last thru the winter.  We have had a warm spell and they all sprouted and took off growing.

Textbook perfect yolos.  I love looking at your work.  Everything is so neat.  I also have managed to organize things and have a good start with kale, etc.

Nice job!

yolos, I have just read completely through this thread and I am very, very impressed.
You are so well organised it puts my efforts to shame.  You deserve every success you have had and I hope to learn a bit from you. Smile

Thank you for those kind words Windmere and Kelejan.

Windmere - I never planted any onion seeds.  Did you plant any?  I guess I will have to order some starts from Dixondale Farms this year and try seeds next fall.

Sigh... neither did I yolos.  It was all I could do just to get my garlic and shallots in the ground.   I had the best intentions that never came to fruition.  I might... just for kicks.. try to start a couple inside.  I like to experiment.  It can't hurt.

Is it possible to take a long shot of your garden area, like from a ladder or step stool?

Sanderson - ask and you shall receive.  December 17, 2014.
2014 SFG in Brooks, GA - Page 7 Panora12

Right now the whole garden is 32 feet from front to back and about 50 feet from side to side.  Next year (or the next) I will be building out from the bottom edge of this picture.  There is about another 20 feet in this direction I can expand.  I am thinking of putting some blueberries, raspberries etc. in this new area. Unfortunately this time of year a large portion of the garden is shaded in the early and late afternoon due to the angle of the sun.  Also, where you see those black pots I will eventually be making those into actual beds, either two 3 x 8 beds or maybe two 4 x 8 beds.  Also, in the center (running from top to bottom) there are eight beds that are 2' x 2'.  There is a lot of wasted space between each bed and if I ever get around to it, I will put in three 3' x 8' beds.  I am retiring Aug 2015 so maybe I can start expanding then and play in the garden all year.  And maybe finally get around to adding drip irrigation to the whole garden.

What a magnificent garden!  And all this without drip lines. Shocked

You could also just abut the 2 x 2 boxes creating two 2 x 8. Or stack a couple for potato beds. ??

Really looks like a university or educational teaching garden (in high school, our campus had gardening design course... which, many days, I wish I had taken).

Sanderson - I have a spot saved for the potato boxes.  I do plan to stack the 2' x 2' boxes to make some extra deep potato beds after I build the 3 x 8 beds to replace them.

2014 SFG in Brooks, GA - Page 7 Empty Roots in My Bed

Post  yolos 12/30/2014, 8:53 pm

I will be following the examples of Jimmycee, Camprn, Sanderson and many others.  The edge of my garden is under the drip line of this live oak tree.
2014 SFG in Brooks, GA - Page 7 Dscn0210
Yes, I knew there was going to be a problem with roots when I located my garden here.  But it is the only place in the back yard that gets good sun during the summer.  I figured I had about 5 years before I would have to worry about the roots.  It took 2 years for the roots to invade the boxes nearest to this tree and 3 years for the main part of the garden to become root infested.

I will not have the time this winter to do a Jimmycee and completely renovate the beds.  I am an accountant and the next three months are my busiest at work so the total renovation will have to wait until I retire in August.  But last weekend I did dig out the first bed, removed the soil, dug out the roots, laid down a thick barrier of cardboard, sifted the soil and then replaced it.  Out of a 3 x 8 x 10" bed I removed a 15 gallon tub of roots.  This should be okay for at least the next year or maybe 2 years.

I will have to start digging around in the other beds to see how many roots are in those beds.  I know the three boxes nearest the tree will have to be dug out if I want them to be successful this year.  There is one 4 x 8 bed and two 4 x 4 beds under the drip line of the tree.  I plan on removing all of them and replacing them with 2' x 6' raised (but not table top) beds.  The bottom layer of the bed will be a 2" x 12" treated wood frame, then another bed (not treated wood) set on top of the frame with a bottom of some kind between the two bed frames.
