rabelgirl, check on a site called myfolia for seed starting times in your area. Also, the old farmers almanac and Johnny's seeds have seed starting calculators that are very handy.

check here for your last frost date.

Welcome from the cold state of Maine.
Camprn gave you be best advice. Find out your last frost date first and then go to Johnny's and enter it to get the seed starting chart for that date.
If you are not able to start your own seed indoors, then check the planting dates to plant growing ones you buy from Walmart, Lowe's, nurseries and so forth.
Good luck.

Re: Newbie with a ??
I used to buy from our local nursery but they went belly-up 4 years ago when Lowe's and Home Depot arrived in the next town. Such a shame. They were so darn knowledgable about their stock, unlike the building stores. The next closest one is 3 towns away from me, too far for my gas tank.

try Gardenate
http://www.gardenate.com/zones/USA%2B-%2BZone%2B6a
Its a great site to use but a bit difficult to find your region if you don't know it already. I subscribe to the reminders and I love the advance notice of what to start.
