Report on Indigo Rose tomatoes

Well, I said I'd let you know how they tasted. Blah is the word. In fact, I'd say the flavor was on the negative side heading toward ugh.

They are dark blue and green when young but turn mostly red when ripe. Report on Indigo Rose tomatoes Idigo_10

They grow in clusters of 8 or 10 together. Today I harvested the first two red ones and taste-tested. Blah.
I guess the fact that they have properties in them that are great for our health will make them palatable if they are in a salad with several flavorful tomatoes.

I agree, QB. I bought one single plant, since I had heard mixed-towards-negative reviews on their flavor. The texture is great, and they are beautiful. But definitely meh in the taste department

that's a bummer. Thanks for the update, I would have planted them because they're cool looking, but not now! I have a volunteer tomato plant out front. It puts out tomatoes about the size of yours and they SOOO good! Really rich tomato flavor. I've tried plant more via suckers, but I can't get them to "take". Wish I knew the variety

I got some dark purple cherry toms last year from a farm stand they were so blah that I put them in the compost. They appear to be growing now out by the rose bushes but I'm not all that excited about it. I think they are supposed to be black so not the same as yours, QB, but I'm thinking any dark cherries may be blah...?

No! Black cherry tomatoes, 3 out of 4 years I have grown them, were delicious!!! They haven't ripened yet this year. One year they were ok, heading towards boring. Since it wasn't my first year with them, I didn't give up. I don't know what growing conditions sabotaged them that year.

I find Black Cherry tomatoes are delicious. They are wine red with green shoulders.

Roasted them for the freezer (on the right) and they are great frozen as well as fresh in salads.

Another update on the Indigo Rose tomatoes.
I've picked some and had them sitting on my counter so I could roast them on the next cooler day. Picked 3 and 4 days ago.
Checked thru them tonite. Most of the Indigo Rose tomatoes are featuring mold at the stem end (just the blue portion) and I had to toss them. None of the other tomato varieties showed such signs so its just the Indigo Roses.
Has this happened to others growing the I R's?

I only saw mold on the cracked part of one, after an extra day on my counter, but that is one of 2 problems that I've had: Cracking is common (may be a normal reason, like a couple of too-heavy waterings) and very few tomatoes (which is occurring with all my tomatoes this year, but the 2nd-worst is the Indigo Rose --my yellow pears had 4, I think, very small ones before the whole plant completely shriveled then got pulled, bagged & tossed). You have more fruit in that first picture than my single plant has produced yet.

I grew them last year and, last year, posted a note of warning about the flavor--not blah but not tomato-ey. They tasted more like plums. I grew tomatoes because I wanted the flavor of home-grown tomatoes. They were cool to look at and to see in a salad but they did not taste like tomatoes. I never had that problem you're having with mold though.

NYCQ, dontcha just hate it when people don't listen? Wink

I haven't had the problem with splitting, and many of my other ones have. And mine is producing reasonably well. Mine are actually pretty perfect - unless you want flavor! Report on Indigo Rose tomatoes Indigo14

Nicola, I think you're right about the mold. It only showed on those that had cracks in their tops. The ones without cracks didn't get moldy. In fact, I roasted them along with others to freeze for the winter.

The bottom section of that plant. I have lots of fruits and no blight so far in the flower bed by the kitchen door, but in the raised beds the blight has just about cleared out my Indigo Rose toms.

My sister really liked the plum flavor and thought it went well with her regular tomatoes. I suppose like a lot of tomatoes the flavor depends some on the heat? I am guessing that the Indigo Rose needs greater amounts of developed sugars to balance the anthocyanin?
