Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
My Lemon Cucumber has been slowly dying off and I pulled it today. 4 cucumbers were left though really little ones about the size of a small roma tomato. *She dabs a tear from her eye*
Getting ready to make a Spaghetti Squash and meatballs dinner with one of the more than 10 sp squash we have to eat this winter, LOL! Must find some new recipe for these

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
How about a cream sauce with some melted white cheese, maybe some herbs, a little garlic and/or onion?
That sounds a lot like how I make my mac'n'cheese, actually. Hmm. A spaghetti squash mac'n'cheese baked up in a casserole dish? Maybe pre-cooked squash first so some of the moisture comes out?

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
We had a big lunch so dinner is a can of soup. I think this is a good night to try to bake the pale green sp sq I picked after the plant died.
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
We had these out of our ANSFG beds this evening with creamed mashed potatoes and braised beef with carrot & celery.
As it has been some what cool this last few days the taste of the carrots, kale and leek were quite different that crops picked when it is warm .
Pick time to pan time was a matter of a couple of minutes and a few seconds .
They were a much more intense flavour and much sweeter. I think that the cold must be changing the plants so that they make more sugar to act as an anti freeze

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I did not take picture of the bean dish, as they never look quite as enticing as they really are and since these beans are SOOOOO cool looking I thought I would send a picture of the beans, or at least what is LEFT of them
And this recipe makes it all worth growing CALYPSO beans again next year, I also grew ginger and garlic so pretty much the recipe came from my garden.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
GWN...... those beans look awesome! thanks for sharing the recipe ...went to the link and found another recipe for Calypso bean and leek soup YUM!
where did you get your beans from and how well did they produce for you?
*example* our scarlet runner beans give us about 1 pint of dry beans per square....
love seeing and hearing about what everyone is eating from their gardens
tonight we had home canned goodness from the gardens.....
we call it *fast food* or *fix your own dinner night*
daughter and hubby had chili made from onions, peppers, tomatoes, garlic
(beef & kidney beans from the store)
son and I had potato-garlic-leek-onion-corn soup
(bacon was store bought)
to our soup we added dried kale, parsley and cabbage flakes
happy gardening

I bought them from the Seed savers exchange www.seedsaversexchange.orgrose wrote:where did you get your beans from and how well did they produce for you?
I got about a pint for 2-3 square feet. Since they are bigger, MUCH better yield that for the black turtle beans, but then again less than the runner beans.
They were very easy to grow.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Here it is December 15th and even those of use in the frozen north are still eating from our gardens. That is such a goooood feeling
That Calypso bean recipe sounded so good I read it aloud to the family. It is definitely going to be tried out here. GWN how is the ginger root growing? In a window and you divide it regularly? Does it get aphids easily (my winter bane this year).
For breakfast I had an omelet with our eggs poached in a portabella muchroom cap with home grown salsa.
Dinner last night was burgers (our lamb) with the last of our fresh tomatoes sliced on top.
The crock pot is full of a Thai curry squash soup for lunch/dinner. The squash is my last Potimarron (thanks Nonna!) and a butternut and a pumpkin from a neighbor. My garlic, natch.

Turan, what protection are you using to keep the crops growing. Greenhouse, etc?

We are just eating from what we have stored. So far we have not had to get into the frozen or canned stuff. That is about ended now, only 1 winter squash left and some apples. This is the latest we have had fresh tomatoes in a very long time.
I kind of like letting the garden/greenhouse rest for the winter. I do not have any vegies growing in pots in the house, except a sweet potato vine. But I think a ginger plant would be an interesting addition. Maybe the leaves can be used for flavoring as well

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Turan
I planted some sprouting ginger left overs last January. It took a LONG time before any growth appeared, but by June it was a great set of plants. They were in a large pot inside and when it got warm out I put it out in my garden for the summer. It THRIVED there, along with the lemongrass, I had also rooted from the grocery store, and the I brought both plants in and have them on my porch windowsill
No Aphids, no problems at all. Since the pots were outside all summer, they do have lots of worms in them as well.
I grew so many winter squash last summer, I am pretty sure we will still be eating them until the next ones are ready.

Thanks. It would be worth trying. It could sit with my citrus tree and sweet potato vine. Our tropics.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
A few snow peas, and lots of oranges from our "dwarf" naval tree. Garlic, onion seeds, and carrots growing nicely.
Potato bucket is in the little green house and growing nicely [fingers crossed].

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Do you grow your navel tree indoors? I've heard that one can do so.
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Donna, the tree was planted outside in the summer of 1996. Christmas of 1997 it had a total of 3 oranges. The next winter 15. After that it's been around 150. The blossoms are heavenly, a few bees come around, then we get rain and wind. I'm surprised how many flowers and tiny oranges nubs actually survive to Christmas.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
It's very hard to take a photo because it is tucked away in a corner behind, and above, the gazebo. Plus at this time of the year, the sun is behind the tree so I am limited as to where I can stand.
