So how did you know when your garlic was ready? I'll get some pics posted later tonight of both my onions & garlic.

I read here...http://www.filareefarm.com/growing.html that when the bottom leaves are dead, but the top 4 or 5 are still greenish...you can harvest. I honestly don't know Embarassed

? these grew volunteer by a faucet! the best I've ever had tongue

The way I understand it hardnecks are known for producing scapes. Softnecks are not known for scape production but sometimes do produce them under stressful conditions.

Thanks LM...do you know if ALL hard necks produce scapes? I'm assuming mine are hard necks? the neck is super stiff..I'd like to try some scapes but don't know if the variety I have will produce any??

It's a local supplier in Moorpark, called Peach Hill Soils. I don't know how far you are away, but we really were lucky to find a mix like that! No mixing...he did it all with our mix and bam........done!

Sigh, I'm jealous. My onions aren't turning out. I figured out my problem though, I covered them and didn't leave the tips sticking out. Seems that makes them behave more like leeks.

Mine were from the little bunches of plants I got from Dixondale. They were only in MM with my homemade compost with nothing else added. The red variety has much smaller bulbs.

lindacol...what beauties!! congrats! I see you braided your onions. Have you done that in the past? I was wondering if they hold up etc. Any suggestions on getting my onions to make bulbs? They have huge necks...and no bulbs. My others have skinny necks and nice bulbs. They look like yours, but not as big Smile

I'm not positive on your garlic. I see where lm has posted a link, I think that's the one I went off of. This is my first season to get "real garlic" haha! congrats again

I ordered 2 bunches of short day small plants from Dixondale. Shared them with 3 friends and planted them in late february. I didn't have much luck when I tried the tiny bulbs a couple of years ago and I don't have the space to give up for so long nor the patience needed for starting them from seed.

I do not give them anything extra once planted.

As for braiding them, I have done it before while drying them as I run out of space, so I can hang them for a few days and to keep them from rolling around but they do not hold together for long.

I ordered from Dixondale for the first time this year - 4 long day varieties. WOW! The bundles they sent me were 2x the amount I expected! They ended up sitting at the post office for over a week after delivery, then ended up sitting over a week at my house before I got the chance to plant. They are doing terrific and I can't wait to see how they turn out. A friend of mine who always grows the most fantastically beautiful onions told me about them, so I am giving them a try. Very happy so far, and the price was very inexpensive, even with the shipping.
