I was thinking if you are going to do all the hard work of digging down into the ground and making beds, in container gardening, a person usually puts some gravel, rocks, pottery shards, etc on the bottom, mostly to hold the mix in and for drainage. Then maybe a layer of the woody stuff, a layer of weed cloth and then your potting mix. I saw a few videos on youtube where they made a wicking container and the guy used empty cups from Micky D's and put an old t-shirt to help with the wicking. What ever you do, dont add sand. It turns clay into cement.

I still have sand in my beds from following the soil mix directions in the first SFG book. Sad

It calls for sand.
