johnsonjlj wrote:We just built and delivered raised beds to my mother this week. They are 8' long, each with 3 of the cement mixing tubs from Lowe's. We used pressure treated lumber, raised them 30 inches off the ground and drilled drain holes in the bottom of the tubs. My mother is 81 and has had 2 knee and 2 hip replacements and is very excited about her new raised beds!
That is awesome! Did you provide any support under the tubs other than the frame?

Wow, Johnsonjlj that will sure be well used! How nice for her to be able to still do something that she loves to do! That is like gold!

Re: Giving the gift of gardening
Daryl, we did support the bottoms, each tub has 2 2x4's to support the weight, each placed 1/3 of the way in from each end. I can't figure out how to post a picture, but here's a link to the picture on Flickr.

My mother has always loved gardening, something that I wasn't interested in until very recently. I love that we have something new in common at this time in her life and that we were able to give her something which allows her to continue doing something she has always loved.
