OMG BettyAnn, that would freak me out! I would call the exterminator pronto unless the nest is accessible enough that you could use a can of wasp spray on it. If you do that, though, make sure you wait till after dark when all the wasps are in the nest.
Best of luck. Let us know. And keep those babies safe!

I agree with Claire -- call the exterminators. If you are really brave (send the kids elsewhere) and have a duster, you could pump Sevin dust into a crack that would go into the nest. But you'd take the risk of being stung before they all die. I've done that before, but wasps don't tend to bother me. Good kindly thoughts heading your way. Keep us posted.

If an exterminator is outside the budget, we had luck (on the advice of a friend) with seven dust. Just pick up the smallest container at the hardware store (under $10 if I recall) and fill a small condiment squirt bottle with it. In the late evening once all the wasps are home for the night, squirt the dust into hole. Do this for several nights in a row until you see no more signs of the wasps. We did this 3 years ago and when we stripped the siding last summer to install new we found the nest and some dead bodies so it really did work. Our nest was only about 3.5" in diameter so we caught them early but in our case it was right by the entrance we use the most to access the backyard and just above our gas grill.

Re: wasp nest in my alum sided house - south side
thank you for the suggestion! we are considering it, but want exterminator opinion. will pay him consultation fee as well for this.
i worry about the fact that the wasps can access parts of my house easily and readily - and no way for me to get all those areas w/o getting them angry and looking for soft tissue to sting. with three young children afoot it does not seem prudent.
if it were just me and the husband, we'd totally be gung-ho about diy but with children in the mix, i feel conservatism is warranted.
will let yuo know what the exterminator suggests and price for thosenosy, err interested - heck i would be, lol.
need to go hang some laundry and clean up main level for guests arriving any minute.

You and I are on the same wave, because you have munchkins and they are getting in your house, I would call the professionals. Also, find someone who won't make you pay for a consult. I personally think paying for a consult isnt cool, but sometimes these people will make an extermination "plan" rather than just a visit.
Are there windows near by? We found that bees were getting inbetween the soffetting (sp) and the siding and made a nest, and then accessed the attic. They made such a mess that part of the drywall in the ceiling rotted out!

Re: wasp nest in my alum sided house - south side
never did get my laundry hung, lol =- friend came over with child and kids all played and we yammered. . .
exterminator came - no charge. didn't see any wasps then and (it's getting ready to rain) and didn't see much damage if indeed i have a nest. told me to call when they're coming/going so he can assess more accurately.
did a cursory observation of premises and didn't see any infestations of any kind so he went on his way.
did i mention no charge?
gonna rain hard any second - it's thinking about it now so probably won't see much activity wasp wise i guess. and murphy's law. we watered everything at dawn. . . ah well. it's all good.

Having been burned in the past by folks offering services and then changing the plan and costing me TONs of money, I urge caution before hiring. Here is an info sheet on doing business with exterminators in your area... Best of luck. http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2091.html

Sorry, yes, the title focuses on termites, but the other information is what I was focused on; the broader picture of finding a licensed pest control person, someone who is knowledgeable of the specific pests and most importantly in safely handling the poisonous insecticides in your home. Someone reliable and willing to write a plan and several quotes. Again best of luck.happyfrog wrote:camprn thank you for you reply but i think you attached the wron g link. that link is for termites.
