I had a fresh salad the first week in Dec last year QB! It was awesome! But you have to NOT plant sfg way! Because you are harvesting what is already grown. So you need to plant closer and earlier!

My mock cold frame (windows placed on top of boxes held in place with wood and pavers) blew apart during last night when this storm Saturn hit. Sad

60+ mph gusts and snow/rain mix as I type. Don't know where all the rest of the windows flew off too but I'm sure that my peas and spinach will be fine as they haven't sprouted yet.

I had salads and soup fixin's to the end of January this year by using these windows. It was awesome! I'm hoping to plant my cold crop seedlings this weekend under windows but I guess I'd better check for the next storm first...or come up with a better window bracing method.

Sorry to hear your frame got blasted apart, hope you find all your window pains undamaged! you might want to put in some eye bolts and use bungee cords to hold things in place against the wind.

That's a GREAT idea, Hoggar! And so simple. The side of the cupboards that are my boxes are very hard to drill into, but I am determined to make this work.

CC, I use a hook and eye with a length of chain. I didn't want mine blowing open. Hubby did some thinking (redoing what I thought lol). Here is a close up of the arraignment. He opened the screw eye and put the chain through, he did the same with the hook eye on the other end. You might have to do a different arraignment but this really works for my lights. It really works.
My windows seem to stay put even in 40+ winds. Of course I don't have Katrina's or Sandy's in Iowa rofl

Planted radishes in my cold frame in the middle of February. They are growing, but slowly. Lettuce that I planted in November sprouted a month ago. Yesterday was the first day I had to vent it for any length of time. Soil temps now usually above 50-55. Close to planting peas. Two weeks, probably will begin my melons.

Lucky you cyclone. Cold slows down growth on all plants so that's to be expected. I just wish I could get out to my cold frame. Snow expected next week once again. Enjoy.
