My Lima bean plants have (and continue) to grow like mad. Flowers have formed and dropped off, but I do not see any pod development. I see several small, stem-like bits where the flowers used to be, but again, no pods. Does anyone have any idea why they're not developing pods and beans?

In comparison, my pole beans are bean-ing like mad.

I live in the tropics and have ample rain and VERY moderated temps. It never gets above 90 and never below 75 or so, so I am at a loss for the limas.

Also, if I want to pick them dry (assuming they ever grow pods), do they dry out as a function of the plant's age or is it a temperature triggered reaction to impending fall weather? If its the latter...I'll have a LONG wait as we don't actually have fall.

Thanks,
G.

I am having the same problem. The plants are very dark green, but no pods! I asked at the farm store what to do. He said to get some phosphate (the middle # in fertilizer) and mix with water to disolve, and put some around plants. The dry is too slow, and I've not found it in a quick acting liquid. It doesn't take much to get the plants to do their thing.

ps: If you get pods, they will dry with age on the plant, but, you can just let the pods get as full as you want, then pull from the plant, and dry on the porch or in the house. You can also pick/shell green (not dry) and cook, we call them butter beans here in the south.

That's the stuff I used to get my broccoli to bloom (form heads) before really hot weather came and caused them to bolt. Called bloombuster. Only took one appliation at half strength.
