My favorite tomato this year
It's not Tomato Tuesday, but I don't visit the forum as much as I used to.
I tried bookoodles of new tomatoes this year from Wintersown. The favorite by far was Donskoi. It had what I consider the perfect tomato flavor. (I don't like tart tomatoes, but the sweeter ones) Donskoi is a very large, rich red tomato. Several were 2 lbs. It had a very small core, no green shoulders & ripened evenly. There was no cracking either.
I still love my Dixie's Sweet heirloom, but this Donskoi really has a much better flavor and ripens much more evenly than the Dixie. I'll still plant a couple of Dixie's to keep the strain going, but my main cropper will be Donskoi now.
Two more I was impressed with were Double Rich and Chico II.
Chico II was a large roma-type paste type that hung in huge clusters & was very productive.
Double Rich was a medium sized, deep red, very rich flavored tomato, perfect for canning.
My tomatoes are mostly gone now since they were so early this year, but I've got several suckers rooting & about ready to plant, so hopefully I'll have a few late ones.
Hope everyone else is having a great season. It finally rained this week!

Re: My favorite tomato this year
I have a tomato plant that is dying which is really a shame because I love the taste of them. I have never tried rooting suckers before but I would like to try. I don't really have any suckers but would it be worth trying to cut some off of the top and try to root it or is it also diseased?

Re: My favorite tomato this year
If you don't have any suckers, you could use the top section. Cut off the bottom leaves before placing the stem in the water. As for disease, I don't know. I have been using a weak bleach solution for blight this year and it has worked quite well.
