in search of compost

Yesterday i went on a mission to find five types of compost. The first garden place i went to stoped me and said i want to show you somthing. he said i'm either going to upset you or you will be happy. He showed me a computer image of large fields were they were growing water melons and tomatoes. he said that the soil is sand nothing special just fertilizer. He said you don't have to go through all that trouble. then his dad, a guy about 70 years old said come out back and let me show my okra. he showed me and they looked good. i did pass the idea of just garden soil through my head for a day and i decided to go with mels mix. what they didn,t show me was all the weeding! and i ain't growing watermelons or tomatoes commerciallly so i'll just keep it small with less work." I guess thats just the way they have always done it."
today i went to the next town south of me and found course vermiculie, 4cf for $35. and i also found mushroom and black kow compost which i purchased several bags. tomorrow i will travel to the north and see if i can find anything like black hen, turkey, or something horse. i can get the peat moss locally. build a frame and i'm good to go. I'm building 4 by 8 ft boxes and start small. hope this was amuzing.

You can also used well aged cow manure, and uncomposted llama/rabbit poo if you know anbody who raises any of these you can ask and it might save you some moolah! I'm glad you went with Mel's mix!! Welcome to square foot gardening!
