What a beautiful or handsome, wonderful looking Rooster!
He definitely is calendar material, and the photographer took an excellent pic!

This week we ordered 12 baby chicks. Nine New Hampshire Reds and three Araucanas, (they lay the blueish/greenish eggs.) We seem to have great luck with the NH Reds and we like the colored eggs. The NH Reds are kinda gentle, they seem to be able to take the cold and the heat and lay well for the first year. The Araucanas are very shy but get along OK with the NH Reds. They will arrive the first week of May.

Re: who has chickens
Oh my goodness! Is there anything cuter then baby chicks? Post lots of pics. Our chickens have started laying again. There's something so rewarding about having fresh eggs from our own hens. Also, coop cleaning and BTE gardening are good friends.bigdogrock wrote:This week we ordered 12 baby chicks. Nine New Hampshire Reds and three Araucanas, (they lay the blueish/greenish eggs.) Re: who has chickens
I have four, all my city will allow. They have an 8x10 run with a coop big enough for the four of them without being too crowded. One Buff Orpington, one Americana, One each Gold and Silver laced Wyandotte. The GLW wants to rule the roost but the BO keeps her in check. Three eggs a day, four about half the time. SLW will fly up and land on my arm on command. The Americana is skittish but after a year she's warming up and doesn't run like I'm going to kill her when I touch her. She will fly up to my arm if I have a cup of scratch for them so she can pick the sunflower seeds out of it. I used to let my last flock have the run of the yard but my current dogs aren't having any of that.

Re: who has chickens
It is that time of year
We have 4 barred rocks in a dog crate. They are 2 weeks old now.
This is my new plan, to get all the same kind on any given year, so I have an idea how old that group is.
We still have one old Americana who has started laying again, and a year old Ancona rooster.

Many places are easing up on rules about chickens, as long as you don't have a rooster. Have you checked, lately? 2-3 hens can get along nicely in limited space and be great garden pets.AtlantaMarie wrote:Sigh.... Y'all make me so jealous! Wish I could have some chickens.... I agree on checking with the local government first. If no then try to get local support to get the laws changed. We have a free online group here called Nextdoor.com. It may be in your area too. Good way to meet your neighbors and find out how they would feel. Call your city, county and state representatives. Start small, we were allowed two with no roosters. Now we have it up to four and are pushing them again for more.

Re: who has chickens
Coddess, I had a kitten show up in the chicken coop one winter. There was an elderly hen that no longer roosted. She adopted the kitten and it would curl up under her to keep warrm. The kitten grew up into a large blue gray tom ( I think) and was never tame but he loved his chicken mama and a couple other hens aND they seemed to lIke hI'm back. He kept the coop mouse free and lived there for several years.

It was written in as part of our codicils when the neighborhood was being built. We have to have an 80% agreement in writing to submit to the county to have it discontinued. I'd be happy to set that in motion, but DH is saying to leave it alone... But if someone comes around with a petition, you BET I'll sign!

Chicken Wormer Garden
Fresh Eggs Daily wrote:Call it folklore or call it an old wives’ tale, but the plants in the Cucurbitaceae family (which includes squash, gourds, and melons) have long been used in the rearing of all different types of livestock to prevent internal parasites and worms. Studies have been done that show that there is a coating on the seeds that works to paralyze the worms, thereby allowing the host body to expel them. Several other plants also work in conjunction with the Cucurbitaceaes to rid the body of worms, including dandelion, garlic, and nasturtium.

I eat them. It's the only flower I will eat...except chive & onion flowers. All others taste nasty to me.
Nice to know we won't get worms. Altho if we do, we can always chow down on some diatomaceous earth.

Re: who has chickens
I wanted chickens for several years. A simple mini flock of 6. This year it happened and here is one who already knows how to pose at the tender age of 3 days -
They take frequent and very short naps of about 2 minutes. Like this one-
Here are a few others admiring their own cuteness in the mirror-
