Someone posted a picture of their garden.....with an occasional circular cage around a plant.....looked like about 24 inches tall ...looks like it was hardware (metal) with lil squares and maybe tied with a zip......thought I would try this since I have some left over....any input would be appreciated.......Ruth

Ruth, is this the type of wire you're thinking about?

Pepper Cages IMG_20120602_073103

It's what I'll probably be using around my peppers and eggplants. I plan on wrapping the outside with some plastic to retain some heat since we still get pretty cool during the night. Like you, I saw this in a thread on the forums as well, but for the life of me can't find it now thinking

I love the stuff. I cut strips and stapled it on the outside of my boxes to keep the cats out.

Tnx for the pictures.....no the wire size I saw was the same size as the bottoms put on rabbit cages and used to sift home made compost....it comes in rolls of about 24inches.....a friend made me a sifter that fits over a wheel barrow and you rub the home made compost over the wire .....saw a pic of Mel doing this in a old tape I made of his program.......so anyway thats my project for this weekend.....

Garden looks great.....bet the cats are unhappy that they cant visit your garden now.....Ruth

Is this it?

The cages caught my eye too, but I'll be using traditional tomato cages again.

I like the look of those, yet if I were to fabricate hoop cages for peppers, I would use wire fencing with larger holes, maybe 2"x4", but that's just me.

I did put together some cages and after having them for about a week, I much prefer the tomato type cages. Smaller wire may be decent for keeping some critters out, but it's not very user friendly. The openings are just to small to allow me to get in there and do anything...second thought that may be a good thing tongue

Sometimes a cage or stake is needed, especially if you get a bumper crops that needs a bit of extra support. On the other hand check out this habenero pepper plant. It overwintered in a plastic greenhouse zone 8 and is on its second year.

@camprm, Just a single stake of wood next to the stem? How high a stake and do you tie the stem to it?

@Kay, that's not a pepper plant, that's a pepper tree. Smile

I use a 4 foot stake and yes I use twine to tie the plant stem to the stake. I am careful to not tie the stem too tightly because I don't want to cut off its circulation as it grows.

Any kind of stake, and yes, tie it loosely to the stake.

My son is the one growing the habenero. He calls it his bonsai pepper because of the canopy shape. Here is a picture of last year when it was loaded with peppers.

All we were trying to do was keep it alive over the winter when we put it in the greenhouse with some Christmas tree lights, but the crazy thing decided to bloom in Dec. and set fruit. Entire plant was covered in tiny orange pea sized peppers in Feb. And they were hot. He called them his habettes. Razz
