No worms!

I spent most of today turning the soil in my very first, new Square Foot Garden after learning about and then ordering the book set on how this method is accomplished. I haven't done any gardening in about 10 years, but 15+ years ago the location was an active flower garden for me, so the heavy Kansas clay wasn't nearly so much an issue for me as it would have been in any other location.

However, I realized that after a day spent playing in the dirt, I had found three grubs but not ONE worm! Then I got to thinking about it, and the compost heap I started a month or so ago has yet to display even one worm as well. How can I have no worms in my yard, and what's more important is - how do I get and keep them?

Would love to have thoughts/ideas/suggestions.

Hi Jewel! Welcome to the Forum. If I may make a suggestion, go to the Home page of the Forum and go to the left of the screen where it say 'hover'. There is a list of the essentials of the All New Square Foot Gardening. If you can , get a hold of the 2006 book. The best part, though it takes some doing, is you don't need dirt. Very Happy

$glad you\'re here$ I have found that anywhere a piece of plastic or cardboard lies on the ground tends to attract worms.

This is a great article on how to attract worms to your garden. I find them under leaves all the time, and rocks.

put some organic material in the ground and the worms should show up...they love the cool, moist, heavy clay. In addition, collect mulched leaves and turn them into your soil.

Worms love coffee grounds, it will attract them like a magnet.

thanks Josh, I find that there is nothing about worms I do NOT want to know.
It seems our world is dependant on them and I think it is SOOO cool that they are revered here.
On rainy days on the roads I have even given a few of them a hand by taking them home to my garden.

Thanks for the info on earthworms! I transfer the worms in my compost pile to my SFG along with the compost. I don't know how long they stay, though.
