I really want to have spinach but so far I haven't been able to find spinach plants. I'm going to two garden centers tomorrow so hopefully they'll have them. If they don't, then possibly I can get them at a flower and plant sale in NJ on Saturday. If I can't get them there, what else could I grow? The original plan was to grow spinach in 6 of the same squares that I have bell peppers in, so I would need something quick-growing and compact if I can't get spinach.

Any suggestions?
Have you ever tried Turnips? It might be a little warm in your area now, but if you can still grow radishes, you can grow turnips. They only take 50 days to maturity. My package says you could use the young greens, so if you want to do that, it would only take a couple weeks to get those. Very Happy

Unofortunately I either have things planted in the squares or I have them set aside to do succession planting. I could possibly add turnips to my list of fall crops. Thanks for the idea! What a Face

I did buy some watermelon radishes this year though! Keep in mind that they're Asian radishes, so they're rather bigger than a conventional radish and they take 60 days instead of 30.

The packet of Watermelon Radishes I have says 35 days to harvest.

However I just checked burpee's website and it says there 60 days to harvest. What's up with that??

I bet you could harvest them at 35 days, but they probably wouldn't be fully grown (I'm thinking more conventional radish size). You could always try!

Oh my goodness, turnips! I planted them on a whim in an extra planter I had, and they came up (honest to goodness) in TWO DAYS. I can't believe how fast they germinated! I need to read the seed packet again to see how long it is to harvest them.
