water empty squares and beet greens ? Empty water empty squares and beet greens ?

Hi guys! My SFG is going gang-busters, and I really owe all of you a big thank-you! I "lurked" for several months before joining the forum, so water empty squares and beet greens ? 109486 to all of you for sharing your knowledge with not only the posters, but also the lurkers!

My two questions are:

With all the talk of watering, I am a little confused. I have heard that peat will dry out to the point of uselessness if one goes too long without watering. So...my squares that are still empty (for peppers and tomatoes and eggplant)...should I be watering the empty square? I have been. (I put the hose on shower after I have watered the plants and just shower the empty squares daily.) I feel ridiculous even asking...Embarassed

Second, can I harvest some of the beet greens with the intention of eating the beets later? In other words, will eating a leaf or two per plant of the greens keep the beets themselves from thriving?

Thanks again!

Good thinking! I water empty boxes too. I would suggest watering the empty squares the same as your plants. Then reach to the bottom of the box in an empty square to check how effective your watering is.

Yes, you can snip beet leaves here and there without interfering with beet production. For one reason or another, plants don't always create beets. Sometimes weather, sometimes soil deficiency. Why not leave a few plants intact as a control in case they don't beet up.
