Tomatoes not having growth
I reside in an area where the current temerature in may is ranging from 40-49 which is quite harsh for tomatoes. I've grown them in a 1.5 liter botteles & paints baskets hung them on a wall where they can have sunlight upto some extent, bot not the whole day. Still the wind is quite warm. Plants are around 1.5 feet tall. Most of the the leaves are infected by the leaf miners so I pluck them hence the plants are now bald except the new leveas. I've witnesses that after the surge in temperature the plants are not having growth & the flowers growing have turned yellow & fallen. What should i do should i place them in
tree shades, is there any issue if they don't get sunlight. As it's around 2 months old & there is no sign of fruit. Can tomatoes plants be grown in bottles?

Re: Tomatoes not having growth
Welcome to the forums from Ohio! Hopefully someone from your geographical area will be able to respond and help you with this issue. Tomatoes like lots of sunshine, at least 6 hours a day, so growing them in the shade is very difficult.

Re: Tomatoes not having growth
I agree, welcome to the forum, fencefacts! Not sure if your tomatoes can be grown in containers or not. Some varieties are better than others for that. Turan might be able to help, he is your Regional Host from that area.
Have you grown this variety before? Pictures are also really helpful when trying to figure out what is wrong….

Tomatoes require 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.
Have you considered a greenhouse, assuming you have a spot with sufficient sunlight?

Re: Tomatoes not having growth
Welcome Fencefacts. As others have mentioned, tomatoes need sunshine.
Turan has a green house where she grows her tomatoes. Other more hardy summer crops are grown outside in beds.
Tomatoes can be grown in 5-gallon buckets which may be easier for you to move to a more sunny location as summer waxes and wanes.

Re: Tomatoes not having growth
I may have just the tomatoes for you. I used to order seeds from Tatiana's TOMATOBase. It was in British Columbia. She sold a line of Russian tomatoes that were bred to survive at 32 deg. F. Mine has survived two frost this year of 32 and 28, plus one killing frost in which they were covered. They are less than 3 Ft. and loaded with tomatoes.
Tatiana lost her mother in the forest and I don't think they ever found her. Wonderful Lady, very knowledgeable. The breeder was named SARAEV and all his tomatoes (12 or so) have his name at the beginning. At one time I had several of the SARAEV tomatoes, not sure I have more than one now. Will be glad to send you some seeds, not sure how many I have. Just search for Tatiana's and it should pop right up.
