I know spring is here because I picked my first asparagus spears today and saw my first snake of the season. I only saw its black tail slithering into the leaves behind the asparagus bed, so I don't know if it was a half-grown rat snake or water moccasin. We had both in abundance last year. (Rat snakes are welcome, cottonmouths are not!)

Anyone else notice any sure-fire signs of spring in their gardens or yards?

Our daily temp swings are 50 degrees instead of 30 degrees. The wind only blows hard after lunchtime. The morning fogs are gone....and I have a yard full of happy daffodils!

I know that I am a sick woman, but I know it is spring when the first fat fly is thwacking himself repeatedly at the front window.

On a more romantic note, I get a bouquet of dandelions, a sure harbinger of spring, preferably from a small grubby hand. They go reverently into a jelly jar at the breakfast table (a girl has to encourage a guy with flowers every way she can)

ROFL, Debs - I was picking on my husband today because he squished a bug...I was happy to see a bug because it was actually warm enough to have a bug out and about!

Enjoy those dandelions as long as you can...mine still has grubby hands (not so little), but has reached the stage of "aw, mom, don't kiss me when the guys can see it".... I know spring is here because... Herz

I have a running thread called "The Toy Box" on the progression of my SFG. Near the end of the thread is a man with a level setting up the next box. He and his brother are the grubby hand crew. These days they spend money to give me flowers, but never with the same delight that bringing a handful of yellow fluff once brought. When I sub in preschool, I can get enough to make wine if I do not end break quickly.

Debs ....I take them any way I can get them UNLESS they came out of a garden I am cultivating. (BTW, they want kisses soon enough if it will charm you into handing over your car keys.)

MY BLEEDING HEARTS ARE BLOOMING!!! Oh, the joy they bring me. They are so hardy - my landlord mowed them down one year, but they have come back so well. And my dogwood blooms are beginning to open. I saw lilacs yesterday. And my whole corner of the world is that magical green that only April can bring. Yea spring!

Ladybugs mean spring for me.

For the last week there have been ladybug larvae on my mail box under the pine tree out front. I've been carefully moving them back to the SFG with the hope they will take up residence to be on hand when the aphids show up. When it comes to aphids in the garden, I need all the help I can get!

I know it is spring because the oaks drop their pollen. Nothing like having a nice clean car one day and the next it is completely yellow
