Giving it a go!
Newbie here - to anything needing a green thumb! My girls (9 & 6) wanted to plant a garden over spring break and we do have a good spot on the side of our house (our dog has already claimed the backyard) so I figured we'd give it a shot and see how this goes. We're just about ready with our cedar boxes and our MM - I'm dragging my feet a little bit because I'm actually really nervous about the whole pest issue....I really don't like critters and bugs!! But its definitely a great experience, they're learning so much already!

If you haven't read All New Square Foot Gardening (2006), I'd highly recommend getting a copy. It was a huge help to me as last year I was a total newbie too. I have so much yet to learn!

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Your comment about the bugs makes me think of a question my mom asked me several years ago...
"Can you plant me a flower garden without any bugs?"

...I had to explain to her that SOME bugs are GOOD, and I would never even try to do such a thing. Are your daughters squeamish about bugs? If not, teach them what the "bad guys" look like and make them the squashing patrol.

Re: Giving it a go!
Welcome. I too am very protective of my plants. I can hardly stay out of my garden now-a-days, and this is my first year too!
The girls will start to have fun with it...and yes, I think making them the bug-police will make it more fun for everyone.

Re: Giving it a go!
I was going to go to VA Tech, but then my parents moved eastward to NC to be closer to me and I wound up transferring to a NC college instead. (That sounds funny...to explain, I was 28 when I started college; I did all my major life experiences in the wrong order.
) My cousin and his wife both attended there, though.
If you can, get your own copy of the ANSFG. It's something you'll want to have on hand to refer to as you go through the growing season!
