mulch material question

Back in the fall I shreeded MANY leaves to make compost. The rain chilled them out. Could/should I use them as mulch on my 4 raised beds

Welcome to the forum Pepper. Sorry, I can't help you there. I use my leaves for compost only. I think leaves can pack down and cause fungus and wet problems so never tried it. Maybe someone who's used it before can jump in here.

Like quiltbea, I've only used leaves in compost, not as a mulch. I've read that it's okay to use as mulch in the fall, but I've also read that compost that is unfinished can be unsafe for plants by way of encouraging the spread of molds and other diseases and for this reason I have never used them as a mulch during the growing season. I think if they are finely shredded they would probably pose less of that kind of threat but personally I would mix them with green material in a compost bin.
