Newbie from Las Vegas
Hello
New gardener from Las Vegas Nevada here.
Ive been active in Vermiculture/Vermicomposting for the last 3 years using the castings for my indoor and outdoor plants since the soil here is so horrible.
For about a year now, my wife and I have been considering creating a small garden to grow our own veggies.
I discovered SFG when I was searching the web looking for info on how to garden in a desert climate.
I must say I am very impressed and excited about SFG.
Although I feel its going to be a huge challenge seeing as my location is not very hospitable to gardening with its very short Spring/Fall "seasons" and extremely hot and dry Summers and cold, arid and windy Winters.
So I got the book yesterday and today Im going to start building my Box.
Now all I need to do is figure out what will grow well here.
Wish me luck. I feel Im going to need it.

howdy from the east edge of nowhere
I'm over in southeast New Mexico. While my climate is a little different we still get the crazy desert temp swings. It's my first year with SFG here and only my second year attempting a garden here. I'm thinking that some type of shade structure like the commercial greenhouses have would make gardening easier here in the desert.
I've seen some really good looking shade fabric at home depot and lowes. I'm thinking it shouldn't be too hard to make up a good shade structure.

Re: Newbie from Las Vegas
welcome to the forum! so glad you found this site!
mel's book mentions using various kinds of shadecloth for protecting delicate plants and reducing bolting to seed on some varieties. . . it might have some ideas in there that will help you get started.
i do know some folks have been creative with trellis' and have them across boxes so that they can then grow lettuce/spinach/etc underneath the trellis so they are cooler by the shade offered by the warm weather vine crops. perhaps that will give you some ideas as well.
again welcome aboard! :welcome wave:
