Square Foot Gardening from family to family
Hi Everyone!
Just wanted to give an update of our various families going to Square Foot Gardening.
I started my 1st Sq Ft Garden in Spring of 2010.
That June we made a trip to visit our oldest son John and wife Andrea and guess what - built them their 1st Sq Ft Box in June 2010. They now have a total of 2 boxes.
The following Spring 2011, our younger son Tim and wife Janette joined an organic community garden with raised beds. We helped them prepare the bed, plant and made trellises. This garden bed is 16' by 4'- huge!
This past Sunday my husband and I helped my sister-in-law build two boxes each 4 x 4 along with two trellises.
I am so excited for all of them.
I will be looking forward to find another family that wants a Sq Ft Garden.
It is wonderful that Square Foot Gardening is going from family to family.

Yep, I loaned my book to a neighbor and yesterday he told me he wanted to start boxes and was asking where to get the "fixings". Told him to let me know when he wants to start and we can take my truck to get them. Or I would bring vermiculite back on my next trip to visit my son. Closest vermiculite I could find was 50 miles away.

Update: 2013 New Boxes
This year we built a 4x4 box for my older daughter inlaw's mom/dad who live in Gloversville, NY (1hr north of Albany)!
The Fri. before Palm Sunday, we drove to my oldest son/wife's house in West Falls, NY (1/2hr from Buffalo) along with the above box, vermiculite, composts to drop off. Her parents were coming the following weekend and would be able to pickup the SFG box, etc.
At the same time our youngest son/wife in DC wanted to make their 16'x4' community garden plot into Mel's mix.
Therefore we also lugged enough Mel's mixture to fill their garden into our SUV and then left West Falls, NY 5 days later to go to DC.
Our vehicle was completely filled with Vermiculite, compost, wood, etc., we barely fit our suitcases!
When we returned home, we made another box for us 8x4.
My brother/wife also wanted an 8x4 so we made one for them.
Hubby made a trellis for one of our neighbors.
Next another neighbor wanted us to p/u Vermiculite for them at the farm.
All in all, it is very exciting to see more people wanted to try SFG. So let's keep passing it forward......

That sounds awesome that you are spreading SFG to so many people! I am trying to get my parents into it... No luck as of yet... My dad is retired airforce and he loves being outside, but I have got him to commit yet lol.. I did get him to a least plant some veggies.. He planted some beans to grow up his fence...

Re: Square Foot Gardening from family to family
My mother in law got the square foot gardening book in 06 and had a 3 4x4 build and planted when I moved in with them spring of 07, hubby deploy just had baby. Went home in fall and moved back the following spring and the back home again the following fall. So in 09 I build my first box a 4x4 with the help of my 2 1/2 year old. My baby just turned 6 this year and has continually asked when we can start the garden this year. Since we have moved to Mt we still have to wait until May 18 to plant in the community garden. The military won't let us have a garden in our yard without having to get lot of paper work pushed through several people hands. Needless to say before moving lots of my friends came to see my garden and I got them started with square foot gardening. I think that I have bought the book 5 or6 times now cause I let people borrow it and never seem to get it back.
