February 2012 Gardening happenings
Wow! this weather, What can we say? AWESOME! I went out and cleaned up the beds, turned the compost pile, went to Menards and purchased the rest of the materials to finish the other hoop house. I will finish it up tomorrow during this 50 degree weather.
I purchased a seed mat 48x20, took it to dad to start our tomato and pepper plants later. I have finally rubbed off on him and he build a seed starting station with 2-4ft shop lights.
Anyone starting plants this month? Folks in the lower portion of this region- its warmer down there, What are you doing?
So chime in here! Tell us what your up to with your garden?
Menards has their seeds display up , Burpee seeds are 40% off!

Re: February 2012 Gardening happenings
Saturday I bought some soiless seed starter and started 6 broccoli seeds. All 6 have sprouted! And the peas go in on Valentine's Day.
Unfortunately this mild winter was all of my tulips and daffodils coming up. The daffs even have buds! They are so confused! Oy!

I got my seed station built last weekend and hope to get some seeds in vermiculite this weekend. I can't help but think we're going to see a crazy bout of cold weather before this thing is said and done.

my 1/2 sqft garden!
today, is payday. i woke up and decided I couldn't let the wire fencing go to waste besides keeping Kane in the yard. I'm restricted due to the clothesline (it was put up before I realized where the property line was. ) It's my 6in x 23.5ft garden for peas, then maybe some lima beans later this summer. Tomorrow, I'll take the 2 garbage cans full of MM to fill it after I put weed block down and line the fence with some plastic due to the neighbor has a dog and I don't want P on my peas
Feedback please.

new bed- leveled and filled,
Nancy, I'm following your lead with the peas. I planted St. Patty's day last year and didn't get NADA!

Did you get your box filled and ready for your peas? Curious how it turned out.

Yes it is! I just leveled it where it was in the pic and filled it with MM that I had in 2 spare garbage cans.

Re: February 2012 Gardening happenings
I didn't get peas last year, either! Stupid rain!
All of my broccolis have sprouted - and surprise! There are 7 of them, not 6. I'm really excited! I hope I can keep them alive.
I stopped at the garden on my way home tonite. There is a lot of work to be done! Weeds to be pulled - both in the beds and around them. All of the beds need topped off. And one of them has come undone in one corner. If I had had my gloves with me, I would have done a bit of work today, but time was short and I wasn't prepared. Ah well - it is still early February.
I can't wait to see more pictures of the new bed! What will you put there besides peas?

I know the bed is pretty narrow but I was thinking Lima Beans for mom. She made a request earlier and I didn't know if I could but that was before the new bed appeared.

Re: February 2012 Gardening happenings
I love the new bed Kim! Is the fence also the trellis for the peas? Where is the plastic going?
A few days ago, I got my onions and some of my annual flowers started. Not a lot, a bunch of coleus for various planters, some cherry black eyed susans and mother of thyme. I think I'll try the valentines day pea date as well and carrots will go in soon after. I'll wait til st patricks day for potatoes.

Yes, the fence will also serve a dual purpose as a trellis also. The plastic will go on the backside , up against the fence. I'll post a pic when I get it up.

Great news! The new neighbors have "officially" moved in and I asked about their dog, Uhh! They have 2 cats! don't know how I got the information mixed up! So, the project is done and ready to plant next week.

KIM ,
Cats can spray up to about 18 inches high from their rear end as part of their scent marking rituals .
I'd put the plastic in place for a while and see what the moggies do or if they are let out to terrorise the locals.

Uh oh. I thought about a Home Depot run, but was able to find 2 packs downstairs. Tomorrow looks perfect for planting. I up-planted the broccolis tonite.

I went to Menards and got some Kale and Kohlrabi seeds. I'm going to plant in the hoop houses also.

Re: February 2012 Gardening happenings
I forgot to soak the peas this morning so I concentrated on the hoop houses first. Kohlrabli and beets are planted, only 25% of the carrots are planted. The peas are finally in the ground!!!!
Hey, what happened to the 50 degree weather? It didn't feel like it! LOL
GG, What potatoes are you planting on St. Patty's day? I tried planting in May in containers but they only produce 2 small taters.

Re: February 2012 Gardening happenings
Finally finished the second hoop house along side the house. I may have gotten a little ahead of myself with the carrots. Even with the hoop house, that spot is still shaded much of the day (winter axis - in the summer that spot is full sun) , so I doubt the temps will reach 55. I may lose the carrots and have to replant later on.
