Hole size in Garden Stick
Does anyone know what the hole size is in the four or six inch garden stick?

Not a clue, but by the looks of them online, I suspect less than 2". I think I am going to do my first experiment with 1.5" holes.

using sewer pipes
I was told by the guys at Home Depot to NOT use the sewer pipes (blue green color) due to chemicals that may be in them. He said to make sure to use the white ones that are safe for drinking water.

While swapping some stuff last week I told one of my friends about the Garden Stick. She happens to have SEVERAL lengths of plastic sewer pipe laying around (anywhere from 8-12" diameter) that were left at her house by a relative. She is going to drop a few by my house so I can try some 'sticks'!

cost of 6"
Wow! The cost for a 6" 10ft pipe in OK is $42!!! I am using 4" and putting 2 sticks about 5' apart and using the nylon netting to try to get my green beans and peas to grow on. I hopefully will end up with a wall of green beans and a wall of peas that I will be able to pick from both sides without having to crawl around on the ground all the time.
HieronRemade wrote:I'm gonna say "Wow!" for two completely different reasons, lol.
1) Wow! This is such a simple but great idea! I'm going to grow flax this year and it would look beautiful in one of these, and I would LOVE to try broccoli/cauliflower. I don't want to get booted off the forum, lol, but this might have the potential to replace SFG! (Joking, joking!!! It might have the potential to further maximize space, but at the expense of much, much more work.)
2) Wow! Has anyone looked at the website for these? They want $100 for the 6" x 66" potted one! And who knows how much to ship something that big/heavy! That's highway robbery!
Anyway depending on my funds I'd love to try to make some of these...If anyone is interested to know I worked out the approximate cost, at least in my area:
A 6" x 10' pvc pipe will run about $26 and a coupling about $7. So, the most cost effective way to do it would be to get 2 pipes, cut them at 6' 8", and then get one coupling to connect the two short pieces left over (creating a 3rd 6' 8" pipe). So that would run you $61 plus tax. Unfortunately the hard part would be drilling the holes...Idk about you guys but I don't have any bits that big! Also, you'd want to fashion your own lid...those run $11 and I certainly wouldn't want to add $33 to the bill; worst case scenario I would duct-tape it!

Very cool idea! I love that growingyourgreens guy - he's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and he just makes me laugh...
All these great ideas, though! I can just see it - I'm gonna end up dumpster diving at all the construction sites looking for stuff for all these projects! hehe...

I camped in Cedar Key a couple of years ago and next to the campgrounds was a roadside market with all these strange looking objects. When I wandered over he had similar contraptions like this growing strawberries. He had strawberries growing everywhere in a small area.

Re: Cool idea - The Garden stick
@ hopeless, are you growing poles or bush varieties?
I love the idea for strawberries.
Is a 1.5" hole enough? It seems rather small. The holes in the vid look much larger.
You know, once you weight the pot with rocks, it isn't very movable any more.

garden stick
Read the whole forum, thank you all for your thoughts! I just received my strawberries, the "sticks" are in the ground waiting to be planted. I painted the white PVC a color that looks better in the garden (roughed up with sandpaper before painting), my husband had cut the 10 ft pipe to the right specs (1.5 inch holes in the top half of each pipe) and dug a deep hole to put each 5 ft section of pipe down about 18 inches. Here's hoping for lots of berries (next year!). I plan on pulling the pipes out of the ground for the northeast winter and covering them with hay.
