Tomatofest.com

Web-based opinion from what I saw was that they were "expensive", but I didn''t seee that they were any better/worse than anyone else.

Good selection, pictures/description of product, easy order entry & shopping cart, good variety, everything in stock, encrypted payment, shipped when promised, shipped USPS First Class, good packaging & even threw in a bonus pack of seeds.

I have no complaints so far.

List of Seed Companies Empty Re: List of Seed Companies

Post  quiltbea 11/20/2010, 12:47 pm

I've used jJohnnySeeds since I started growing 2 years ago and am very happy with them.
Good quality seed and several varieties for the northern gardener.

Great Seed starting soil, too.

They sell the soil block makers so you don't have to start your small seedlings in pots. Excellent results with those as well, but I only have the 3/4" for starting seeds and 2" size for transplanting before I transplant larger plants into homemade 4"-6" air-pruning pots.
The large soil block maker is too darn expensive, over a hundred bucks.

I got healthy plants and quality seeds from TerritorialSeeds, as well.

No complaints about either company.

List of Seed Companies Empty Re: List of Seed Companies

Post  happyfrog 11/23/2010, 4:43 pm

today i received my first 2011 seed catalogs.

thought it would be fun to put the web links as i receive them so folks can order a catalog, too.

totally tomatoes call toll free 1-800-345-5977 totally tomatoes

vermont bean seed company
call toll free 1-800-349-7333
vermont bean seed company

perhaps others can follow suit with the current offerings as they arrive? i know i don't remember all the places i requested catalogs from this year so it will be fun to get new offerings as well as the current catalog of whatever company i already had in my file to drool and dream over when there's snow and ice everywhere.

www.thompson-morgan.com - Thompson & Morgan, UK-based, but ship seeds to Europe.

www.suttons.co.uk -- Sutton's Seeds, also UKbased, also ships to Europe

www.willemsefrance.fr - Willemse, which I *think* is based in the Netherlands, but has great prices on seedlings AND seeds

Post  Odd Duck 12/10/2010, 1:55 am

Has anybody posted John Scheepers, Kitchen Garden Seeds, yet?

http://www.kitchengardenseeds.com/

I like their selection and seeds, their packets are OK, not great.

Another one is Botanical Interests, lots of interesting selections, big variety.

http://www.botanicalinterests.com/store/index_index.php

I've tried Gourmet Seeds. They have a nice selection, good seed, but really lousy packets. I've had a few of their packets split open while outside planting. Lost, scattered seed all over. Evil or Very Mad Not a happy camper when that happens. Their packets have no pics, no description of the variety and only very general planting instructions for the veg.

Another brand I've found locally (haven't ordered on-line) is Seeds of Change. Have an excellent packet, nice photo of the specific variety, variety specific info on the pack including a description of that particular variety and RESEALABLE! By far my favorite packing for ease of use, info being handy, etc. The big drawback is price. They're more expensive than most.

Found it

http://www.seedsofchange.com/

They have 100% organic per their site and they have a big selection.

Be sure to order as early as you can......looking through some of the catalogs, some varieties get backordered and you might miss your planting time if you are doing under lights early like me !!! I'm sure there are plenty to choose from but just in case. A new spinach variety I wanted to try is on backorder until 1/15 Sad

List of Seed Companies Empty Completely Lost...

Post  cautery 12/13/2010, 2:25 pm

OK... too many choices....

Fairly certain that I want to use mostly open-pollinated and primarily heirloom varieties... As I said in another thread, this year will most likely be primarily a "skills course", but part of that is seed collection.

There are SO many companies... Are there companies that "specialize" in folks down south here... I've seen some that seem to have regional specializations.

I haven't even read the book yet, and I already feel like I'm "behind the power curve" for this coming season.

I love Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. I've met some of the people who work for them at a local festival and they're really nice too!

I ordered some seeds from Terroir Seeds and they were wonderful about replacing a packet that didn't germinate for some reason. I would definitely use them again.

I absolutely love to dig through seed catalogs! I think the prettiest (and glossiest) is Baker Creek, but I haven't ordered from them yet.

List of Seed Companies Empty open-pollinated seeds

Post  ander217 12/14/2010, 8:10 am

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds sells only open-pollinated and heirloom varieties. They are collecting seeds from all over the world to try to preserve them. Their catalog is a joy to browse and they are super-nice folks. I haven't received my new catalog yet. I can't wait. You can check them out at rareseeds.com

I agree that the folks at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange are great, too. They are the best source I've found for potato onions and a few other hard-to-find heirlooms.

(See, Megan and Jennie, I found a way to plug potato onions even in the winter.) Smile BTW, Megan, did you ever get your onions and garlic planted?

Thanks everyone!

I've been out of the country for 3 years and the house is finally set enough that I can start thinking about my garden.

Since I'm starting from scratch, I need ALL NEW seeds, so this topic came out just in time for me.

Post  LaFee 12/23/2010, 5:57 pm

Thanks for that, Mick -- that's one I hadn't seen yet.

I get Suttons and Thompson & Morgan regularly, as well as Willemse, which I think I referenced upthread, but it's a bit harder to find them here on the Continent.

(Interesting bit last spring - got the Thompson & Morgan UK catalog last spring, then a few weeks later the Thompson & Morgan France catalog arrived....mon dieu, the difference in pricing was shocking! I'll buy my seed from Blighty, ta...no way I'll pay 2-3 TIMES the price for the same seed from the same company!)

Actually, believe it or not, my star seed (carrots, radishes, garden peas, and Moneymaker tomatoes) all came from lowly Lidl, at a whopping 39 centimes per packet. I had all of every one of them that I could deal with.

(by the way, your wife's fairies are absolutely lovely...when someone says SHE's off with the fairies, it's an enormous compliment!)
