Well, I did not use 5 kinds of compost. Shame on me. I tried to save time and I got a truckload of compost very early in the spring from a local nursery. I called the company to see what was in it and it had a fair list of things that *might* be in it.
Now I'm paying for it with blossom end rot, fruits not setting, and nasty yellow leaves. I have only had 1 zucchini and 1 yellow squash from the 4 plants of each that I planted. My cucumbers were tiny balls that turned yellow and mushy. My spaghetti squash has only had 1 female blossom that I carefully hand pollenated and watched closely until it rotted from the end up.
Now I know for next time that boffer is serious when he says 5 kinds of compost!!

Awww Sad I'm really sorry you had to learn the hard way! I learned it too, last year, but I honestly did try to follow the rules. All I could really find was cow manure for compost, and my plants did terribly. I had to start feeding them miracle grow regularly.

I'm in the process of making my own compost now, so hopefully I won't have to depend on miracle grow any longer. I hope your plants stick it out this year. And hey, even if you don't get many veggies, you'll at least have gained a valuable lesson!

Mel said it; I just believed it.

Funny how some of us read the book and thought that 'if 5 is recommended, then 6 or 7 must be even better'. Other folks read the book and thought that 'if 5 is recommended, then 4 or even 3 should work'. Huh! Think how boring it would be if we all agreed about everything! Wink
