Potato Onions/Garlic

Orders put in. .

I ordered yellow potato onions from SoutherExposure. It sounds like it will be a couple of years before I don't have to buy onions but that is ok. You have to plan for the future too!

I ordered silverskin and rocambol garlic from Filiree Garlic Farm.
If these work out I won't have to buy again. Except for experimenting! I will have a bed reserved just for them. Now to get some straw for mulching and liquid seaweed for soaking the garlic along with baking soda. I am going to have fun trying this. Last year I just stuck some from grocery store in the dirt and did great. But after doing my research like a good gardener, I decided I would take some extra precautions since I am putting so much money into them!

I would like to try some of these multiplier onions. Just waiting to get back to work for some dough to make the order. When do you plan on planting them?

I placed my potato onion order also. I'm not going to put them in my SFG because they take so long. They'll go up on the patio with the potatoes and strawberries and my other long season and perennial plants. Now all I need to do is convert my patio from rubbermaid totes to raised beds. Ahhhh, dreams.

well they said they wouldn't be shipped till after the 1st of Sept. So I have time to research when to plant lol

I got an email yesterday (SESE) saying my order was being shipped :scratch: How should I be storing them until I'm suppose to plant them?

I'm in the same boat! I want more more more so I've been "cheating" here and there... not on the MM though, just containers. I'm planting my potato onions, shallots, and garlic in my beds, it will force me to build/buy more before next spring :o)

Hubby built me a 4x6 that I have fall planted....when that gets pulled I will do the onions and garlic....humm or maybe I will put them in my 4x6 that has the cauliflower/pole beans/cucumbers...that will be gone after first frost...

I think I see another 4x6 in the future...rofl...hubby is gonna kill me...but I am hurrying the plants this way lol...

Yep, you need a 4x6 for garlic and a 4x6 for onions! Really. I planted a 4x5 for onions and garlic last fall, and it wasn't nearly enough. One box for each!

Cool, dry location, in a breathable container: a refrigerator is perfect, if you have room.

I got my potato onions from SESE in August last year. I stuck them in my shop, but it wasn't cool enough so they started sprouting big time. I went ahead and planted them in September. They ended up having 6-10 inch leaves by the time we got a frost. We had a few days below 10° that they survived, but a few inches of the leaves got frost bite and died off. They were ugly looking, and didn't get as big as I expected, but they all survived.

yup I am sooo gonna get in trouble lol...

No he really don't mind..My garden keeps me happy while he plays with trains.

He just was a little grumpy the last time and made the kids help because I get to hot then I get sick lol...I will do them in the spring this year.

But the kids are getting where I have to tell them "chore time" first time was fun then they figured out it was work!

What would be the ideal depth for a dedicated garlic bed. I know the book answer would be 6” but some things just seem to do far better with more MM depth.

Garlic is a shallow grower Westie. I grew mine in a bed that was 8" boards but only 6" of MM. They did fine. And I think with more compost added, they will do even better.

Oooh! A bed for each! Wonderful! I wish I could plant my front yard. I'm out of sunlight in the back, and getting the neighbors to cut down the willow that shadows 2/3 of my yard isn't going to happen. For now, 4-4x4 plus my patio is all I can do. Sad

Not quite the true believer yet! Or is it 'Trust but verify'? LOL

The onions in my TT boxes grow the same as onions in the ground. I've only grown garlic in boxes. Since the bulb grows right below the soil surface, and the root structure is so small, I think extra depth would not be of value.

Last year I planted 9 and 16 per square. The bulbs in the 9 per squares were definitely bigger.

Yeah, I am going to try to space mine out just a bit more. I don't know why I like to cram things in so much, but a dedicated box for each of the garlic, onions and shallots will increase the yield, I hope. Very Happy

rofl..well that was a duh moment...compost is always added after harvesting lol..But I found a person with rabbit poo...and I am gonna put some on the bed this fall.
