companion planting with asparagus

I have 4 4x8 beds that were filled with soil before I discovered SFG. I have been planting in the SFG style, but haven't yet replaced the soil with MM.

In one of those beds, I planted approximately 25 asparagus crowns, of which around 20 survived their first winter. Because of the length of time to get the crowns established and to maturity, I don't really want to fuss with moving them. Because of the ones that did not over-winter, I have a few squares open randomly in a 6 x 4 area and am looking for ideas of what to plant with them. I hate to let the open squares go to "waste" but they are a pain to get to once the asparagus is overgrown. I am thinking of planting head lettuce there because I won't have to harvest continually.

There is also a 2 x 4 section along one of the short edges that I will be removing several inches of the soil and replacing with MM once I harvest what is currently in there. In that section I am thinking of transplanting my strawberries so that all of my perennials are in one bed and I don't really have to fuss with planning around them.

Thoughts from those with more experience?

I certainly don't have more experience than anyone else, but why not replacement asparagus? I working toward a dedicated asparagus box myself (I think I got the idea from the book) and have staggered crowns from the store with some I seeded myself so I have something to munch on while I am waiting for my crowns to get established.

I hate the thought of having to buy more crowns. They are absurdly expensive when purchased individually around here. Since next season will be the third season, we have been looking forward to a bountiful harvest.

I bought 14 little crowns on sale for 1/2 price a week ago (about a buck each). We're going to build a box soon and hopefully get them in the ground in a few weeks. I wonder if it's too late to do that? I'm planning on mulching them heavily this fall to help keep them warm. Might even put hoops over them for winter.
